Sound-based fire extinguisher puts out flames

Two engineering students from George Mason University are using the unique power of sound to put out flames – and they’re hoping the technology will become powerful enough to help extinguish forest fires.

Now all they have to do is find the best song for extinguishing fire. I wonder if Firestarter is any good :D

technically its an air based fire extinguisher. At a shear guess it somewhat holds the 'wanting to escape' CO2 (produced by the fire) over its self, starving it of any fresh oxygen. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm a little interested.

Interesting tid bit of "how it works"...
There are two forces in action here: 1) The acoustic waves increase the velocity of the air, thinning the boundary layer where combustion occurs; and 2) The waves disrupt the surface of the fuel, which increases the width of the flame, disrupting combustion as the same amount of heat is spread over a wider area.

It seems to work well on fume based fires. Wonder how it works on material fires such as wood. Seems like it would just reignite. Also thanks for the link showing that the US has had this for years.

i thought it would blast sound waves like those in concerts....but its different...I dont know how this has developed...good idea though...:)
