So do these guys never have any time off to do grocery shopping? Even if they are working long hours, they should know their hours in advance, and have plans made. I'm not saying that their job isn't hard (I've worked in an Emerg. and have known many of the 911 team), but they should be at their station in case an emergency call comes through, not busy buying stuff miles away.

Firefighters, much like ambulance drivers or police can receive a call over a radio. They can respond to a call from any location, and I'm sure they would drop their groceries in a hurry if required, and the grocery store would probably reimburse them if needed.

What a jackass indeed. If he was as smart as he "thinks" he would realize all the budget cuts. Kudos to these brave FF trying to save money. I too have NO issue with their actions. CH

They went with a firetruck to buy food, that's not ok! and it doesn't save any money driving that 15 tonnes+ vehicle up and down town without any use for it.

Would it not make more sense to get one of the firefighters who has a car drive there and buy the food instead? The others are at work and the truck is ready for any emergency!

I don't like the attitude of the dude but he is kinda right...

what would the guy making the film do if they were shopping when his house was on fire, bit OTT a crew and engine shopping on work time, thats good tax payers money management. a bit like our concils here in uk

Why would they be shopping during an actual fire that had been called in #6...they wouldn't!

A lot of their time is taken up training and waiting, they are not fighting fires or freeing car wreck victims all the time.

How do we know that they haven't just finished a training exercise down the road from this store and did the shopping on the way home. The money they saved on that amount of shopping in that particular store will more than cover the cost of fuel to get there anyway!

#5 So true! But whitch does more damage? 3 minutes of wide spreaded continuous burst, or couple of headshots? :D

If the fire truck is being used as a shopping vehicle and four or more fireman are going in it to buy food, that is clearly wrong and I think it would make headlines in any newspaper in the world as a waste of resources and potentially dangerous.

If the crew were returning from an incident or maybe a demonstration at a school or maybe they had been called out to a false alarm at the supermarket or something then it's less wrong but still not great judgement as it could be construed many ways.

If the guy who is complaining is the owner of the store he is referring to then this is business suicide, you don't do that. Would he still be complaining if one of the firemen went to the supermarket in his own car rather than paying twice the price at the local store?

P.s. #9 I agree.. Guess NASA would also do their shopping with a shuttle if they just could.. We humans.. *Adding some more steam* ..I'll bet these firefighters are like seniors in their job too.. So they got the power to say what they wanna do at workplace.. They get the highest paycheks also.. So they are dudebros and they choose to do shopping with a freaking fire-engine instead of someones v8 6,4 litre Chevy or some other gas-guzzler.. I'll bet that the department also haves like a newcomer, who would like to take a little brake from the new settings and go to the grocery store to get some air.. BUT NOOO! Those dudebros made him mop the floor while they were gone! >:)

Good morning to all of you! <3

#9 Firemen usually work 24, 48 or 72 hour shifts depending on station/city policies. Guess what, they have to eat. They cook/eat in house. They go as a unit to get groceries just in case they do get a call while out, that way they can respond from where they are and not have to return to the station to get the emergency vehicles. They also perform routine fire safety inspections of the store they're in while there. So relax and be thankful that you may never need their services, and if you do maybe they're as close by as your neighbor grocery store.

The "citizen" is being a jerk and does not know how or why the firemen do things.
The two stores being talked about are just six minutes apart. They are Raley's Grocery and Wagon Wheel Market which is a high-end gourmet type store with much higher prices. Some cities pay for the groceries for the fire dept and some don't, and where they don't the firemen pool their money together for what they want to buy. They make a trip to the store as a unit with all their gear so they can respond to a call on the spot. The driver stays in the truck and the others can leave the shopping cart behind and get moving quickly. Sometimes the emergency is closer to the grocery store than the firehouse. This is pretty much the way most fire departments do things.
Here is a related explanation.....

That fat complainer got a little beer buzz before going to grocery, saw something that he thought was an infringement on his "tax payer rights", and decided to cause a scene because he knew they wouldn't argue.

This defines the pussy.

How is it possible that people downvote the comments of those who do not agree on the same opinion? Dickheads!

The fat guy complaining is right. He acts in the best interest of his family and community! He even shows big nuts standing up and doing something for what he thinks is unjust. I wanna see one of you fuckers do that, not just complain on the net.

so what would be better, go shopping in their own vehicles, then have to get back to the station change and then back in the fire engine? no! yuo take the engine, shops and then rush off when a call comes in. If they dont make it there, or fail at the response then you investigate why and see if this is the reason. If they meet their targets, and save everything. who cares.

I'll get down voted for this because in general I agree with the gentleman even though his ways could be improved. I get buying dinner and cooking together, but why can't they bring their own dinners/lunches to work like the rest of us?

Additionally, as municipalities run out of money, they want to charge our insurance companies (as well as assess special fire taxes) thousands of dollars for routine emergency responses when everything is already paid for except the gas but think nothing of driving to the neighborhood grocery store on our dime.

Further, let's be careful about holding these guys up as super heroes, many game the system horribly, are off with pay for minor injuries and these days are not in near the danger they used to be. Los Angeles's firemen responses are ~80% for first aid only.

They should be paid well, but in many areas they and the police are bankrupting the cites they are supposed to "protect and serve" so overall let's have some perspective.

#25 "why can't they bring their own dinners/lunches to work like the rest of us?"
I bet you get to go home after work every day to have dinner with family or friends, don't cha?
Firemen live, sleep, cook and eat together as a unit at the firehouse for shifts lasting up to 3 or more days
at a time ,so "bringing their own food from home" would be hard to manage. They agree on what they want to
eat at each meal and take turns being the chef to prepare it. Taking time to shop once or twice a week
while coming back from a call seems pretty reasonable to most people commenting here. You can see by how many
bags of food they are loading up that it is probably a weeks worth.
They might not be super heroes but they do go into burning buildings trying to save lives on a regular basis
and many pay the price with their own lives.

Guess i give my 2 cents to this too..

I personally dont see any problem at all. Its like cursing on a cop because he stopped at a donut store for lunch. These guys are on a hot wire, dropping everything in case of emergency..and who knows if that emergency is closer to the market then the station? A fire doesnt happen close to a fire department just because its good for the tax payer..it happens everywhere. In a bigger city i would rather have filled up firetrucks almost "patroling" or just parked in some areas then all in one place waiting for something to happen maybe miles away.

None of you know where they came from, so there is no right to judge. I bet my internet connection that they didnt just randomly said in the FD "Hey lets go shopping..my fridge at home is kinda empty"...."Yeah..mine too"

Ok that guy is a tool. There is no call for calling the filming guy an asshole just because he doesn't agree with him. I don't know exactly how the whole firefighter thing works other than several day shifts and cooking themselves but i don't know if they have to pay for the food they prepare themselves or if that is payed by the tax payers. But if the tax payers pay for it there cant be much of a difference. Sure a big truck like that takes up a lot of fuel but it seemed like they were shopping big so they probably saved the same as it took up in extra fuel and that store was probably much bigger and had all they needed so it saves them time. The difference in the end is probably so minute that making all that fuss about it is totally ridiculous. I am mostly amazed by the calmness the firemen showed.

harassing firemen is not what your old lady meant when she told you to get out of the house and get a hobby. she thought you would go chase some parked cars.

In a big city.. How many fire-calls are there in a day?.. Dunno, but I think it would be more efficient if there was like a "cook" who brings the food to the stations or so, that it wouldn't get dumped if the call arrives..? Patrolling, in a ways I guess, is ok, but still.. There are more efficient ways to deal with this kind of problems and for that I salute the citizen! O:)
