A self serving machine is nice, laying the tracks where ever it rolls. But where? Any links to further reading?

#1 (i) it replaces existing track with new track. So it's not creating brand new connections.

As for where: you can find these all over Europe (at least!) wherever track maintenance is going on. I saw one up close a few months ago as they renovated our local train station. It's very impressive ... and also VERY LOUD!

Here is a related video on snotr from five years ago. Plasser makes very rugged pieces of machinery that do the work of hundreds of men in a much shorter time.
