A person stands back from the tree, measure the height with a stick, fingers or anything. Then someone else paces from one side of the tree trunk out until they reach the end of the stick or whatever. Multiple the number of paces by the stride and you have the height of the tree. Obviously, there was not a boy scout in the whole lot.
