In my experience they don't teach you stuff you really need to know for life. they teach you more ways of thinking so you are capable of figuring out how solve your problems.
Learning the specifics of something means you take that direction and go with it and learn all you need about that. but before you make that decision of what direction to take... you need to learn about all directions and approaches how to go from point to point.
all the insane math / physics / history stuff we learn our school expands our minds so we are capable of learning the stuff we need to know to follow our goals.

This is amazingly accurate. In my town two guys, the vice president of the local bank and the owner of an insurance company, asked the school board if they could teach a class on finances. Basic stuff like budgeting, balancing a checkbook, how credit works and they were willing to do it for free. They just wanted to volunteer to help educate the students in real world financial skills that they weren't being taught and the school board said no.Yet it's astonishing how many kids come out of school with no real day to day survival skills.Instead they are taught about self esteem.Irony. How much self esteem will you have if you're broke because you can't handle your finances?

What a load of codswallop. Let's ignore, for the moment, that most of what he said isn't taught in school is, in fact, taught in school.
The idea that fundamental, foundational knowledge and methods shouldn't be taught because they aren't immediately practical to everyone is horrific. That's a recipe for turning out ignorant twits like this en masse.

Well, his point is not wrong... but its just too negative. He only mentions the wrong things about school and not the good ones... That's not a good way of seeing things in life!
I personally think that it's the dumbest thing not to go to school. Just because school system sucks in his country, doesnt mean all do! Look up Finland and Denmark schooling systems
I know, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs left school and got successful, but it's wrong to give exceptions as examples... and humans always tend to do that Some kids want to go to school more than anything and they cant... because they don't have money , or there is no school in their area, so going to school is a privilege to them, and not a right... sadly.
I live in Romania, and here we have one of the hardest educational systems in the world. What we do in early years of high school, that's stuff people do in University in US, and I'm talking about the difficulty of Math, biology, physics, chemistry, etc.. I showed what kind of math and physics I do in High school to some friends of mine in US and they were shocked, bcuz they did that in University.
Still, I don't regret I went to school at all! School indirectly teaches us a lot of social conduits, and many other stuff. One day when I was in high school, one of my colleagues complained about what use has math in life, and of course all my other colleagues started as well. Teacher then asked if anyone thinks different and why math is good in life? I was the only one that I raised my hand and said: of course I wont use Pythagoras theorems or similar stuff in daily life, but math is the sport of mind, and helps our brain to work more comprehensive and faster , in other words more logic. Just like you want to get a fit body, you need to exercise, so is your brain If you don't use it, it gets dusty!
Stay in school kids, I know some things are messed up, but school is good for you. It has been proven over decades: Knowledge is power!

Well it's a rapid shortcut. Maybe he should have use what he learned as tools not facts. That's what highschool tolds you, learn with the basics that are told go deeper and make you own vision.
I'm not sure that if I was told how to pay taxes as a kid I would have listened nor understood what it was about ...

#10 Well I agree with you, some stuff you actually use, but most of it you don't... 
I actually use now stuff from physics and math in daily life since I work in programming: for example hexadecimal,decimal, binary numbering systems, cartesian coordinating system... etc. In 3D graphics its also good to know linear algebra or trigonometry. In Android apps for example its good to know physics, such as formulas and equations , basically mechanics...

This video wins the award for most misplaced outrage. By the sound of it he had a pretty decent curriculum, which is more than can be said for the average school kid even in the more well-off countries. Educational reform is necessary especially in the USA but mostly because the amount of dollars flowing into the public school system has been systematically dropping, and the overall quality is under serious pressure.
The most important lessons of life are not learned in school; family (especially parents) has a role to play in preparing you for life. School is there to prepare you for your future study and/or job; a typical job interview seldom includes the question whether you are capable of filling in a tax return sheet.
I can't recite the full text of basic human rights but I know why they were established, and I'm sure the right to go to school is one of them. ;-)

First of all, nothing better than coming home from a long weekend at work and enjoying an awesome snotr conversation like this one! That whole issue about education is a big one, especially in the US, where you have the freedom to choose the education for your kids or yourself. Interestingly every comment had a very valid point in my opinion, especially #9, like you said you may not need the math's theorems you studied for anything, but studying it trained your brain to think more critically overall, so keep going to school. On the other hand there is a revolutionary educational method out there in the US, of a school that lets their students choose what they want to learn completely. Their basic philosophy is that children will learn to know what they need to study for their own life, a leap of faith for a parent. These schools are Sudbury Valley Schools. Not many studies of the outcomes are out there yet, but with time it would be interesting to find out what they are. I know a few people whose kids went there and they turned out to be very well adjusted adults with a college education. My personal opinion about the school goes both ways.

More and more mediocre administrators at the top and middle are chewing up huge amounts of money where it's a but a trickle into the classroom. In my local colleges over the last 30 years, student population has increased by 15% but the admins have exploded by 400%. That's the problem. WTH do these people do?

I absolutely agree with everyone. In the learning process, we receive a lot of information that will hardly be useful to us in the future, with the exception of such basic sciences as mathematics, physics, biology. And I was always interested in the question - why do we write so many essays at school? How can this affect our preparation for adulthood and the choice of a future profession?
