A Visualization Of Every Nuclear Detonation From 1945 To Present

It's been 70 years since the detonation of an atomic bomb at Hiroshima. You would think that the horrifying after-effects of the bomb would teach the world not to play with nuclear weapons, but unfortunately it did not. Here's a video that maps every single nuclear weapon detonation since 1945. There have been a lot.

Am I right in saying none of these was in / from Germany? And yet, the potential threat from that nation, fortunately not realized, accelerated the weapon race. The nuclear waste / contamination takes almost forever to deal with. 'Nice' gift to our children!

#5 Maybe you should study your own country's history a little more.Your schools probably delete and whitewash some of Germany's history. Scientists in Germany started work on developing a nuclear weapon, called The German nuclear weapon project (Uranprojekt), in 1939.
Thank goodness the Nazis and Soviet Union were unsuccessful in making a nuke because the world would look much different today. Luckily it took the Soviets until 1949 to develope a small nuke and the US and England were way ahead of them by then. Can you imagine what Stalin probably would have done to the hated Germany if he had had one before the war ended?

#6 Stalin would have done the same like the USA did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki...just killing a lot of innocent people. :|

#6 No, I can't imagine what Stalin would have done - I don't know him good enough.

But we do know what USA did right after they developed it.
And BTW, are you certain that your schools haven't deleted and whitewashed some of USA's history?

#8 "No, I can't imagine what Stalin would have done - I don't know him good enough."
Not the least bit amusing.
Read your own history and you will see the type of maniac Stalin was and then
take a guess if he would have dropped a nuke on his most hated enemy. Hell he
murdered millions of his own people plus millions in Ukraine during his reign of terror.
Japan started it , the US finished it ,and hundreds of thousands of people on all sides lived
because of the bombs.

I wonder why we still produce weapons of mass destruction. Aliens just have to wait until we kill our own planet, and they take over with not even a single shot fired..

#12 Sizz was going to work on getting a squirrel emoticon to help diffuse arguments and I hope he is able to do it.
I would also like to have a red-cheeked embarrassed happy face to use when someone realizes
that they said something dumb. Any chance of that happening?

#6 There certainly is no whitewashing in German history class. On the contrary. It is a constant guilt trip. I estimate, that one third of all books we read in literature and history class deal with the despicable way Germany acted in WW2. In my eyes this is adequate, but many rightwing Germans complain that it is over the top.

#16 That is interesting to find out and so I wonder why #5 , who is from Germany , did not know of Hitler's plan to develop a nuke. Maybe he skipped too many history classes. Most people in the US understand that the common German people did not realize the horrors Hitler's Nazis were visiting upon Jews and other undesirables. Sooner or later you just have to let go of the guilt. :)

#17 Nobody knows how aware Hitlers contemporaries really where about the horrors of the Endlösung, but it was made damn sure that the following generations knew exactly what happened. Today there are many voices that say "why should i feel guilty because our grandparents f...ed up?". But i think it is better to make sure that the part of the German psyche that led to the Holocaust is treated with caution and Germans are kept painfully aware about it.

Just saw your comments on the nuke video.

I wrote: the weapons race started way after the defeat of Germany.

This led you into some assumptions.
A) i'm not german, i live in germany.

B) i do know german History and all of its flaws and mistakes. Actually there is quite a few in the 19th century that are leading germany downwards.

C) there was a race to develop nuclear bombs, but that is not what the term weapons race is about. The nuclear arms race went in from 1947-1991 and is getting a revival at the moment.

D) i don't bash the us per se, i bash stupidity and ignorance. While the richest and most clever people on the Planet live in the us, the average american is way more ignorant and stupid than the average korean/japanese/canadian/european/enter first would country.
