333 Year Old Hammer

It looks like something from "Lord of the Rings" or "Game of Thrones," but this 333-year-old hammer is the real deal. It was built in 1682, in Finspang, Sweeden, and is known as the Häfla Hammer. Although it may look medieval to us now, it was the latest and greatest technology of its time. Forging iron had relied on raw manpower since ancient Europeans began experimenting with alloys sometime prior to 1800 B.C. Finally, the process was becoming a bit more automated.

Today, iron is not produced on a mass scale, having been set aside for cheaper options, such as mild steel. There are few left who know the craft, and even fewer hammers like this one. In 1990 the Häfla Hammer was declared a historical monument, but the restoration process was slow-going. However, the hard work paid off - here it is in action for the first time in over a decade.

That is called a "trip hammer" and they have been used for over two thousand years.
"Trip hammers were usually raised by a cam and then released to fall under the force of gravity. Historically, trip hammers were often powered by a water wheel, and are known to have been used in China as long ago as 20 AD, in Rome by the 1st century AD and in medieval Europe by the 12th century. During the Industrial Revolution the trip hammer fell out of favor and was replaced with the power hammer." Wiki

#4 Yawn!! Might have known, you get a great song going, all we needed was verse three and instead, we get a fecking history lesson on fecking trip hammers. I mean why was it called a fecking trip hammer! You would have to be really blind and stupid to trip over a thing as big as that and probably working in a foundry isn't the job for you. :squirrel: Mutter moment! MM I give in, I just give in, *ankers all of them, feck, can't hold a tune. I don't know, it's tragic, tragic what does a hen have to do, back to the fecking perch (I love my fish) *ankers, Feck :S :squirrel: JJ SSASP

#6 Tut tut I thought you were a grown up lol. You could probably make it up based on the first two verses

I guess the video highlights a great apprentice prank "Oi Jimmy Lad, nip down to stores and bring us a 1682 trip hammer, don't forget to take a string bag" "and while you're there we need a couple of left handed screwdrivers a glass mallet and some sky hooks, on your way back, nip into the deli and get me half a pound of chicken lips" :S >:) :squirrel:

Peter, Paul & Mary – If I Had A Hammer Lyrics

If I had a hammer,
I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening,
All over this land

I'd hammer out danger,
I'd hammer out a warning,
I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

If I had a bell,
I'd ring it in the morning,
I'd ring it in the evening,
All over this land

I'd ring out danger,
I'd ring out a warning
I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

If I had a song,
I'd sing it in the morning,
I'd sing it in the evening,
All over this land

I'd sing out danger,
I'd sing out a warning
I'd sing out love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

Well I got a hammer,
And I got a bell,
And I got a song to sing, all over this land.

It's the hammer of Justice,
It's the bell of Freedom,
It's the song about Love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

It's the hammer of Justice,
It's the bell of Freedom,
It's the song about Love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land. >:)

;) #7 I am "very" grown up , but that does not change the fact that I don't remember the lyrics to this wonderful song. I apologize :* . Why is someone down-voting #10 when all he does is provide us with the lyrics of the song, this being after waiting the whole day that someone help #1 and #2 complete the song. As JJ would say, nuts.. just nuts ;) :squirrel: <3

I really do love that song..thanks everyone for sharing it.
#13 in their defense though, as I mentioned in my comment with the "good Fishing spot" video, even after I was registered with snotr and I voted comments up and down, it still took me another year or so before I felt comfortable enough to make my first comment, so in retrospect I was also someone who just voted but didn't comment. I guess that could be the reason. So nice of you to stick up for your fellow countrymen #13. :) <3
