To be honest what you really don’t want to see while looking out a window in a plane is lightning striking the wing, body etc of YOUR plane ;-) Been there, felt that, scared the hell out of me.

why the lightning didn't attracted of the highest point of the plane?
Where am i wrong?

I could be wrong but it it looks like the bolt exited the plane down thru the tires to ground. On the still shot you can see the bright flash there.

@5 You're correct but god is a lousy shot :)

#5 - I expected it to hit the tail too. The science of how lightning finds a path in micro-seconds is fascinating.

Planes actually get hit by lightning frequently - very safe as it's a perfect Faraday cage. Scars the paint-job a bit, but that's about it.

#5 Lighting travels along path of least resistance, so even though some point on-earth might be higher then the other, path to it has more resistance and thus lighting will not hit it.

You can also see at last frame, it was traveling from top-left, so the top of a tail was in fact further away near the end of it's path.

#5: I think the highest point (whatever that thing is called) isn't actually metal, but some composite.

Yea, i think that would be the 2nd worse thing to see while in a plane. While in flight, I think it would be far more terrifying to see a swarm of birds though.

Can anyone explain the slow motion effect (0:20)? The distortion can be possibly explained by EMP but what about that spherical "zoom" effect? Lightning could possibly influence the brightness or focus but not the picture geometry or zoom (in such a short moment). Any ideas?

@5 lightning does not always strike the tallest part of an object. Lightning travels the path of least resistance (the path changes based on the current conditions (temperature, moisture,...).
You could be standin up in a 20m tall tree holding an umbrella and your friend could be beneath the tree and he would get struck by lightning and not you. (highly unlikely though :D )
If you watch #8 video, you can see lightning spreading in to several branches (each traveling a path with least resistance, trying to dodge the hard paths), whichever branch reaches an object with a different charge than the cloud wins, so to speak.

It's a shame I didn't think of this earlier or we could now have a big debate about things you wouldn't want to see from an aeroplane, it's too low down now! (by the way that's also something you don't want to see on the planes altitude gauge) >:)

Yeah that would be fun and it''s not too late to have that discussion #15...what's too low, the discussion or the airplane lol?... but anyways on a more serious note:
The thing I don't want to see from an airplane is a wall of the side of a mountain...not trying to be negative, but still very sad and thinking about flight 9525 from Barcelona to Düsseldorf (<3) Germany :( :'(

And imagine sitting inside that plane beneath the spot where the lightning struck or you are the guy outside signalling the planes...:D
