#1 It's a lot of steam.

#2 That is a coal - burning locomotive with a boiler that turns water into steam for propulsion. The smoke coming from the "smoke-stack" ( which is correctly named) is the byproduct of burning coal. Some steam can be seen exhausting down by the wheels. Most of the steam is reclaimed back into water to be reused. Did you think the train carried a big tank of steam to run on?

#7 Most of my experience working on steam engines is with steam turbine main propulsion and ship-service steam turbines on navy ships, and triple-expansion steam engines on ferries and smaller ships. Both types reclaim most of the steam and after it loses enough heat and pressure it goes into the main condenser to be reused. If on this coal-fired steam locomotive they do not reclaim any of its steam and instead uses some of it to help the dirty exhaust make its way up the smokestack then I stand corrected on that point.
