I despise the Americanization of good traditions and greedy selfish adults steeping to a new low makes this even worse. Nothing I would pass on to my children!

Even though I agree with you on the majority of your comment #1, I still think the video was hilarious the way the guy "tricked" so many and in all fairness most people really laughed when he revealed himself.

In Ireland, which is considered to be where Halloween originated, the day is still celebrated much like it is in the United States. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. In rural areas, bonfires are lit as they were centuries ago, and all over the country, children get dressed up in costumes and spend the evening "trick-or-treating" in their neighborhoods.
So #1 , just what did we "Americanize"about Halloween ?

Category should be pranks.

Trick or treat in England is completely different to Ireland and the USA due to the law passed in 1927 after the last illegal Witch burning in Dovedale Derbyshire in 1925.

Firstly seven days before Halloween on the 24th of October the Trick or Treat'ers have to go round with a letter of consent to every house they intend to visit on the 31st. The letter on A5 paper has the names of the visitors on the top and bottom of the sheet in portrait and the visited house has to agree Witchcome the traditional term for the visit. The paper is then cut in half and on Halloween it is pasted on the door or window to allow the visit to take place. The Trick or treat'ers must carry their half of the sheet on the visit and check that their witchcome acceptance sheet is on display or they must not knock. This stops old people getting bothered if they don't wish to participate.

Upon arriving at an acceptance house the T&T's in odd number groups of no more than five (the number of witches burnt in the 1925 fire) Must each knock on the door and shout "Witchcome Witchcome Witchcome" then stand completely still and quiet, while the house owner opens the door. The house owner greets the T&T's with a hazel broom (masses of these are sold at this time of year but it is traditional to keep them year after year). Without saying anything he or she holds the broom twigs above the head of the middle T&T'er no more than a foot above his/her head. You then have 'Witchcome standoff' eventually one of the T&T'ers will shout "Witchcome" and the homeowner tries to tap the shouter on the head with the broom (not hard mind). After every T&T'er has had their turn they get a treat OR if they feel the House owner had over tapped (hit to hard) they are allowed to trick, usually by rolling a peeled clementine down the hallway. It all sounds a little quaint and odd but it's very popular. On the 5th of November most houses burn a Guy in their garden to celebrate the execution of Guy fawkes in the gun powder plot. :)

#1 You must have no joy in your life. I didn't see one person handing out candy, get angry at the "ghost" once they realized it was an adult.

This was all in good fun, having a good time trick or treating.

Methinks this was a sad excuse for you to try and find the tiniest reason to bash America.

#8 Suxy my willie you are such a kill joy, I bet you were the snotty child at school who always took the teacher a poached apricot (another English tradition) every morning. I bet you were called Suxy the snitch. Spent too long with your head down toilets looking for the blue goldfish at your local comprehensive if you ask me, the way things are going you and I are going to fall out I'm already considering taking you off my Christmas card list Witchcome witchcome Witchcome. May all your poos be porcupines.

#7 Thunders enjoy the thought of the tradition as it is far more real in the world of Brigadoon than the carfly or the winkle picker. Take on board the mystical world of witchy magic woooooouuuuuu! ;) Nuts :squirrel:

I am just satisfied that I managed to prod you into working so hard for so little. :D
(and the homosexual bent of your thinking is disturbing) :O
Picture of thundersnow58 achievements

-1 20. thundersnow commented 8 years ago

#19..omg..never fails you expressing your homophobic attitude across the board, clearly shows insecurity on your part..otherwise you would understand the humor, hence understandable you find it disturbing...JJ, who is exuding large amounts of male energy that at times even oozes out of our electronic devices..hardly sounds gay to me..but what do I know...
Picture of sux2bu67 achievements

-2 21. sux2bu commented 8 years ago

Homophobic is a catch phrase used by the gay lobby, but I don't fear or hate homos,I am disgusted by what they do (as are most men) and his repeated reference to it kinda says something about him. Male energy? A guy who sees himself as a hen? I think you see him as a kindred spirit of gay/liberal thought since you seem to be anti anything that is good and wholesome about the US.
Maybe you would be happier in Europe.

#21 Suxi Suxi Suxi take a Chilean pill for goodness sake. Let me clarify a couple of things for you (you sweetie you) I am not homosexual in fact I adore women, most anyway, was never keen on Myra Hindley if I'm honest but she's on a very short list.

I have no problem whatsoever with homosexuals in fact the more time I spend in their company the more I find them gentle, kind & honest which is more than I can say about a lot of straight people if I'm completely honest. I find it abhorrent that some people in society ridicule and in some cases attack them verbally and occasionally physically.

My guess is that on the whole these are the same people who have issues with black people and are usually the uneducated of society who have confidence issues and personality defects.

People should learn to be tolerant of all races and sexual persuasions and put their energy into reacting against the evils of this planet like war terrorism and perverse religions.

I am on Snotr in disguise, Okay, I come clean I am not really a Hen and I'm not as old as photography guy. Not that I have an issue with old people...feck me you have to so careful these days.

MESSAGE TO SNOTR don't suppose you will read this but we need a sticky out sideways tongue icon ..please :P not like that

#23 Don't be flattering yourself :O

#22 You said it very well, and that's exactly the way I perceived you! :* Very much agree with you, especially your third paragraph.
Picture of sux2bu67 achievements

-2 25. sux2bu commented 8 years ago

#24 Flattery? Don't need it.
Well of course you agree with fudge cake, no surprise there. You seem to need constant reassurance and support of your comments which shows your insecurity and a lack of self confidence . You even implore others in your comments to back you up and support your arguments. You are an example of the sickness creeping through the country that is lowering moral standards while also supporting politicians who condone infanticide by funding Planned Parenthood.
Picture of Judge-Jake53 achievements

#23 #25 I think I can safely say on behalf of most people on Snotr that any feelings towards hitting on you would involve a mind altering substance and two paper bags over our heads (the second just in case the first came off). You can be quite an unpleasant fellow when you want to be can't you? You seem to be carrying an enormous chip on both your shoulders. What's your problem come on you can tell me I'm a Dr :squirrel:

#26 The insults from you two have been no less barbed than mine and at least you seem to be a thinking individual iinstead of a mouthpiece for every corrupt agenda of the liberal left (read communist) party in the US. It is easy to see why a jackass is the symbol of their party. >:)
