Icebreaker Crowd

Opening shots from Peter von Bagh's 2008 documentary "Helsinki, ikuisesti" ("Helsinki Forever";) show a crowd admiring (and soon being chased by) the icebreaker Tarmo in Helsinki, Finland. Apparently filmed in the 1920s.

The voiceover quoting Eino Leino towards the end is not related to this footage in particular. It translates roughly as:

"We do not live only in the present
The past – with all its memories, events and experiences – lives in us
And often it just might so happen that the past is stronger than the present"

I think JJ meant they are all dead because the film was from the 1920s.

Looks like all men and boys, I guess women and girls had more sense than to play chicken with a ship.

Can you imagine all the lawsuits, jailtime/fines that would be handed down nowadays for doing something like this/letting your kids do something like this. Child protective services and the whole works.

Now fast forward to today and some places there are bans on tobogganing! Tobogganing?! Seriously? We're not allowed to slide down a slippery hill? But it's okay to sit inside all day and play video games and live an unhealthy sedentary life?

I'm so glad that we did all the things when I grew up that kids are not allowed to do anymore now, play by creeks in the woods, go ice skating on a frozen lake and play hockey with sticks and rocks, play hide and seek on scaffolding on construction sites, walk through cemeteries at night, trying not to be scared, go sledding down hills until it was so dark we had to stop...we really did all those things..

#6 Kids in your country are not allowed to play in the woods, play hockey with rocks and sticks or walk through cemeteries? Strange rules, harsh country. :P
