Fun with burning methane on a lake First experiment

The man in the video uses his knife to free methane gas trapped below the ice. Methane, which is produced in human farts, is highly flammable.

Methane bubbles in frozen lakes in the Arctic circle are quite common. They're produced as bacteria metabolize decaying matter on the floor of the lake. Watch what happens when this guy ignites the methane gas below.

That's also what may happen during hydraulic fracturing (fracking), and tap water gets bad contaminated with methane and other things :(

good work! Less gases to destroy the ozone layer. Methane is waaay more harmful than Co2. :D

#3 Actually, according to a study published in the March 2002 Journal of Geographical Research by a joint research team from the University of Maryland and NASA, overall, the increased amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is speeding up the recovery of the ozone layer.

You're probably thinking about greenhouse gasses, in which case burning the methane really is an act of environmentalism.

God, I am a smartass :)

#3 Methane has a much more potent greenhouse effect, but it has a tiny fraction of the lifetime of CO2 in the atmosphere. It's removed by natural processes very quickly, so it's not as bad for global warming.

0:51 OI! You nearly nicked me eyebrows off with that thing! Mind giving me a warning next time, mate? :x

He seemed pretty planless, futzing around with knife and matches like that. Maybe just light a stormproof match and then punch that hole?

I wonder how well that fart-coffee tastes... but it's probably just fine.

- "While methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, there is over 200 times more CO2 in the atmosphere. Hence the amount of warming methane contributes is 28% of the warming CO2 contributes." https://www.skepticalscience.com/methane-and-global-warming.htm
- "[Methane] is initially far more devastating to the climate because of how effectively it absorbs heat. In the first two decades after its release, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Both types of emissions must be addressed if we want to effectively reduce the impact of climate change." https://www.edf.org/methane-other-important-greenhouse-gas
