What's wrong with driving backwards (except for a small number of elderly people) and having trains with half the number of seats in one and the rest in another direction?

if you face the seats sideways, then you don't have to turn them around at all, duh!! I think the Japanes just like gizmos that do dumb stuff

its for different purposes, on normal trains they have both set ups, groups for groups, singles for singles. this one can just change if you know its going to be a school group or whether everyone is just going to work. a complete waste of money but i would prefer to have it then to not have it

#3 ... a small number of elderly people? where do you get that knowledge from?

A lot of people out there (young and old) arent able to drive backwards without getting sick (like people that get seasickness). By turning the seats you can be shure that everybody is pleased, so more customers.
Because there are less people out there that get sick while riding forwards.
Also it uses less space.
Also sitting in front of each other, like 2 backwards and 2 forwards in a cabin isn't save at all in case of an accident.
This is safer!

I would like to know if this will actually save money in the long run.

1) I'm sure this is purely for the comfort of the passengers. Consider that these trains are Shinkansen = Bullet trains that go over 350km/h. I don't mind riding the train facing backwards, but at those speeds it might be a different thing. Believe me, it's fast! For instance, crossing a bridge over a river takes less than a second!
2) The trains are tremendously long, so turning them around would require lots of space. It really is easier to have them reverse direction.

Useless. If more seats would pop out it might have been something but just changing the position is just useless.

Nice innovation, seems to lose a fair bit of area utilisation though to allow for it.

Also, why do only half the chairs spin? Is one of the purposes of this to cater for families and groups of friends etc. who want to sit in a booth?

#18 they could rotate in shifted groups because they would otherwise block themselfs. look how close they get.
