This was an attempt to get stubborn people to evacuate areas that are going to be devastated by 140 mph winds and a huge storm surge. Too many think they can tough-it-out only to need rescuing during the worst of it.

Where i live is not this kind of natures dangers. But still we have standing safety order from government. Each person should have water and food for 3 days. Just enough time to get all rescue crews on full gear and kicking. Bridge the cap between the disaster and when its safe to start help people.
And like #2 says, i think too that its exactly for those stubborn people.

If you're stubborn, having some idiot grossly exaggerate the situation won't motivate you. You're better off stating it clearly and succinctly and leaving it at that. Some will, some won't it's part of life.

#9 the extrapolation from 800 in Haiti to "you're all dead, including your children" in Florida will never pencil out. Save the drama for the daytime soaps. Now if Haiti was wiped off the map, then perhaps, but saying 800 dead in Haiti and being surprised is like hearing the murder rate in Chicago and being surprised.
