LOVE the way the elderly lady starts berating him...I can just imagine what she was saying " You should have known better at your age"!

I've been in a couple of situations in my life where time has stopped, and you don't really think or act on what you normally do, but on instinct. I once caught my niece from stumbling head down the stairs, i managed to jump and catch her leg before she flew down. I had a cup of tea and a plate of sandwiches in my hands, but in that moment, they stopped existing. Another time i was working high up at a building, mounting a 3 meter long automatic window shutter. We were 1 guy short so it was just me and the other guy, and while mounting the shutter he slipped and fell off the scaffolding. I had no choice but to stand there and hold the 3 meter shutter with my arms stretched as far as they could, and wait til he got back up. You need 2 guys to lift those things, and i have no idea how i was able to lift and hold on to that thing, but i knew if i dropped it, it would prob hit my colleague on the way down, and god knows who or what on the way further down the remaining 8 floors. When he came to it and got back up we secured the shutter, and then i just lost all my power, i literally collapsed and was out for the rest of the day. I also stopped a guy from beating up another one, without really thinking about it. It was late night after a pub crawl and i saw a guy beating up a seemingly weaker dude down a street, and i just screamed at him "hey, stop and stand still or i will put you to the ground and call the police", resulting in the guy running away. I'm not a fighter, he prob could have beaten me too. But it worked i guess, i helped the other dude up he got to his feet and managed to call some friends that came to pick him up couple moments after.
But yea, rambling on here i guess, i do have experienced more stuff like that, but yea, the point is that when you think you need to act quick, you tend to not think about all the consequences, like this old hero in the video, all respect to him, he just couldn't help reacting the way he did.

#1 Well Julie let me put it this way with age comes wisdom and experience. I used to teach Karate years ago and much like riding a bike you never forget. I've fought all kinds of guys in the dojo big, small, some higher dan's than me, I can handle myself. Rugby players on the other hand tend to have slow reactions some of them are also a bit thick, isn't that right Julie.

#5 yea, he was hanging onto the safety harness, dangling under the scaffolding we were standing on. Usually someone is helping you up, but since it was only the 2 of us and i was busy holding the shutter, he had to kinda swing a bit to get a grip. I guess it was only matter of half a minute, but it felt like 10 for me at the time. He didn't mind calling it a day either

#9 I read a great article years ago about the sheepdog and the sheep. In summary, most people are the sheep but the sheepdog is there to protect the sheep from wolves (or danger in general). You and people like the old man in the video look out and protect those around you no matter what, often without thinking about it. Thank you for being a sheepdog.

#14 Oh Fox. A kata is a pattern performed against an imaginary opponent to perfect blocks, punches & kicks and is very useful in grading's to show sensei understanding of the traditions of the karate form. Students spend hours and hours practising blocking punches and kicks from real opponents at very slow and increasingly faster speeds and countering those attacks. This is then practised in different types of kumate. For beginners very controlled three or five step through to Dan's (blackbelts) of which I am a 3rd, where free style kumate is performed. Gum shields are a necessity and although contact is supposed to be controlled you do get accidents cut lips and the odd broken nose are not uncommon. You cannot after years of that kind of training say that you could not handle yourself in a fight on the street. The problem is these days your opponent is likely to have a gun and several mates. I've had a couple of incidents on Saturday nights when I've had to deal with an aggressor . But hey now I'm a monk.

#15. Well Jake, speaking as someone who's helped out on numerous occasions in my mate's night club as a ahem... doorman, I've seen and been involved in more than my fair share of ... altercations. There have been Bruce Lee dance-alikes galore, and without exception, the look of utter surprise and disbelief on their faces when their 'moves' don't go according to plan, is just priceless. All it takes is a tap from my right hand, and they go down like a sack of spuds. Mind you, I can't remember ever knocking out a monk, but there's always a first time. Go in peace my son.

#16 I think it rather depends on the type of martial art you are describing. I totally agree with you there are some styles like taekwondo for example where they rely on quite a light frame and lots of high kicks. We had an inter style competition back in the early nineties. Each one was fighting one of our guys three of which are or were in the shotokan British squad. Each bout lasted just a few seconds and each ended up with a knockout for our team without a blow or kick landing from the taekwondo guys. Check out this link of Frank Brennan one of the guys I used to train with way back. The quality isn't great in places and it does start with one of the kata's that you think are so funny. None of the fight take place outside a nightclub and he hadn't had a drink and he wasn't especially angry. https://youtu.be/0oCUMhkpn7s If you think he's a pussy my advise even today don't tell him.
