you make a jam chuck, on the last frame; a piece of wood into which you jam the inner or outer part in this case of what you're turning and it stays in place because it's a very snug fit. the chuck is only used for finishing the piece and the turning has to be done carefully because only a snug fit holds it together. pretty simple technique in fact but very effective.
and that's a cup, not a bowl nor a chalice; just decorative and fairly easy to make when you're a wood turner but nice to look at.
yes, woodturning wastes a lot of wood, most of the time, especially when you're doing a hollow vessel.
