I wanted to see how he managed to stick the open end of the "bowl" to the lathe and get it dead centre. Still not sure after looking at the last frame.

you make a jam chuck, on the last frame; a piece of wood into which you jam the inner or outer part in this case of what you're turning and it stays in place because it's a very snug fit. the chuck is only used for finishing the piece and the turning has to be done carefully because only a snug fit holds it together. pretty simple technique in fact but very effective.

and that's a cup, not a bowl nor a chalice; just decorative and fairly easy to make when you're a wood turner but nice to look at.

yes, woodturning wastes a lot of wood, most of the time, especially when you're doing a hollow vessel.
