It actually uses the front radar of the car to create a virtual image of the traffic up front. On the latest updates the rader can shoot under car infront and even see the car behind it. Recognizing that there is a object closing in way too fast it starts braking before the car in front does anything. Beeping is the warning and if the driver doesn't react it will automatically brake. This is included in every Tesla, even without the autopilot features(hardware and safety features always standard).
