God the 4-8-4 Northerns were such beautiful locomotives! I'd love to see this one in the 2 tone grey Overland Limited paint scheme... :)

As for how they did it without ripping themselves to shreds...the wheels were counterbalanced versus where they were connected to the drive rods. Hard to see in this movie but there was generally a section opposite the drive rod connection where there was more material cast into the wheel.

The world record for a steam loco is held I think by the British made Mallard, and broken way back in the 30's.
