That's what I like about sea shanty's and similar...its easy to make up new verses as you go along. :-)

These songs have a practical function too, as you have to coordinate work on a large ship and must know how far the others are. And when you are done singing you can start sailing.

I can see how the exuberant spirit of the singers may have been a catalyst for the sailors to even want to venture out over frightening territory and possibly lose their lives. I felt the tempo and lyrics moving me and I'm afraid of the ocean.
