#3 They are racing pigeons transported to wherever then released to race there way back home. They would have been picked up from different destinations then transported to wherever in the lorry.

Pigeon racing! They load the birds into little cages on the trucks, then transport them to the start point...then the whole damn lot are released in one go. Pigeon racing is a very popular 'sport' ( apparently ) although not as popular as it used to be...and...(believe or not) even the Queen has racing pigeons!

Just imagine if you wanted to sabotage that race...just be standing by the side there...with a Falcon or similar on your arm ready to go.

#5 is right. That's why they wait for the whistle. If there's a false start, they all have to come back.
Half of them did go in the wrong direction though.

#10 Many of them would have been transported hundreds of miles so they fly about in a circle for 5 minutes to get their bearings then ta ta away home they go.
