The soldiers in the tank decided that the vehicle was hostile and potentially very dangerous. So they decided to run drive over it to minimize the explosion which still was extremely powerful. And after what I was told, at the cost of their own lives.

People may have died in the blast but its pretty clear none of them were soldiers.

There is no way the soldiers in the tank were harmed. These tanks are made to withstand such blasts, even direct hits sometimes. However a few civilians were killed. I still wonder why they didn't run away when they had the time...
