Cracking London’s Legendary Taxi Test

Imagine a world without GPS or sat navs, one where you’d have to commit to memory thousands of streets and landmarks just to get around town. For London’s black cab drivers, that’s all a part of the job. In order to get behind the wheel, drivers must pass The Knowledge, universally regarded as the world’s toughest taxi test. Applicants often take two to four years to prepare for the infamous exam, memorizing over 25,000 street names and 20,000 points of interest. Only one in five applicants pass the test, giving The Knowledge the same success rate as the U.S. Navy SEALs.

Even more impressive is the way a cabbie is trained to take you on the longest possible route, bore you shitless with his inane banter during the journey and then stitch you up with an outrageous fare when he drops you off. :)

I lived and often travel to London using black cabs, I won't argue about the difficulty of the test but many drivers have no clue about most destinations and rely on GPS. Basically you quote the post code, they type it on their device and drive. Nice video, but far from reality. Still better than any cab in France :D

#2 the app doesn't take you to your destination though, or chat to you about useless and fun trivial matters. Nor does it have a face or eyes that has a story behind them. And it sure won't open the door for you either, when you get home at 4am drunk as a skunk... If this was just about getting from A to B with any public transport as quick as possible, an app would be helpful, but its about the drivers of these taxies and whats required to know to get that job.
