Eciton Army Ants - The full colony passes by our house

This was a visit by the entire colony of Eciton army ants (Eciton burchellii) to our property in Costa Rica. We got extremely lucky they didn't actually enter the house! This video shows the shear number of ants you will see with some near super fast motion video. I also must warn you, I included clips of them eating a grasshopper which some people might find a bit repulsive. Enjoy

Well it is to be thankful that we don't live in Costa Rica. I guess the grasshopper was like stopping of at Mackies on the way to the cinema. Notice how they tried to scarper with the last bits when they heard the police siren. :D

#4 In all seriousness, thankful I don't live any more south than I do. Like it with less critters and nice distinct four seasons. :)

I find it extremely impressive how evenly spread out the soldier ants are. It's like they know exactly where to be in the line.

Reminds me of a 1954 movie with Charleton Heston called "The Naked Jungle".
