Let's say every restaurant only had menus with no prices and you were on the hook to pay whatever they charged after the meal. That's healthcare in America and you can thank insurance companies for lobbying both sides with big money to ensure you stay in the dark about pricing.

The only way to get insurance companies' boot off our throat is to either make healthcare 100% free market or 100% socialized. The former forces them to provide transparent pricing and compete in the free market (aka like restaurants). The later simply shifts the price gouging equally to rich and poor alike via government taxation or currency debasement. There's no such thing as free healthcare but the system of fraud & extortion we currently have, has more in common with a 3rd world shit hole than a 1st world nation.

FWIW, June 2019 Trump made an EO (executive order) to do this.

"President Donald Trump on Monday issued an executive order designed to pressure insurers, doctors and other health-care providers to disclose more information about their prices.

The executive order will direct the Department of Health and Human Services to require hospitals and insurers to disclose negotiated rates for services, as well as provide patients with out-of-pocket costs before their procedures.

“We are fundamentally changing the nature of the health care marketplace,” Trump said before signing the order.

Trump said the lack of price transparency has benefited industry giants “greatly” and has cost Americans millions of dollars in health care costs."
