Huh... all of those bombs dropped in Vietnam, and not one of them made it's way to Hanoi Jane. Thank god we have laser guided weaponry these days, to take care of these "problems". Speaking of which... this vid makes me want to go eat some pho' tonight!

Ok...I would like to say something. War is horrible, war is man's inhumanity to man, war is scary and no one should live that traumatic experience BUT war is good. Why do I say that? Well because almost all of the surgery that saves so many human lives today was first used in time of war. All the terrible injuries soldiers sustained gave birth to all kinds of life saving surgery. In fact i'm sure all the things that were invented in war time...ended up saving more lives then they took.

The next time you fry an egg on your teflon frying pan remember this : Teflon was invented by the military for use in war.

I don't support war...but war is good in the long run. It is sad that we have to evolve using such violent methods.
Picture of Pato500029 achievements

+1 13. Pato5000 commented 11 years ago

And the funniest part (or shall I say the saddest) is that most americans still think they won the war...

#12 Sorry, but I don't agree with you. Of course when you're in a hurry you have to find your way quickly, but I think that all the "benefits" of the war could be reached from another way less agressive.
Picture of dushan56 achievements

+2 14. dushan commented 11 years ago

nice speech #12, and teflon frying pan invention is worth how many lives? stupid me, i didn't know that war is so constructive and good for humanity. so that is what you will be thinking when you push the button mentioned above

There is no way that any advantages from war has saved hundreds of millions of lives. Surgery techniques had to be invented first before they were used.

I respect your optimistic attitude but you have to get a reality check.

BTW - on a separate note, i voted this down solely because of how disgusting this war was.
Picture of LightAng3l49 achievements

-2 17. LightAng3l commented 11 years ago

#14 I was just giving examples it's not my fault you made a connection between surgery and teflon ...
It is more likely to fry an egg than to have life saving surgery don't you think?

and #16
-Super Glue was intended to be a plastic suitable for gun sights
-The canned food in your local supermarket was invented for war
-the ability to mass produce synthetic rubber
-Germans developed alternative fuels like Hydrogen Peroxide
-radio war invented for the military
-use of penicillin to treat wounds and bacterial diseases
-Pepto Bismol, which is still used widely today, was developed during the war as well.

and the list goes on and on and on...

If you ever find yourself in a helicopter being rushed to hospital...remember helicopters were invented for war.

#12, the polytetrafluoroethylene (teflon) was not invented by the military. A man called Roy Plunkett discovered it in 1938, and was working for the Dupont company. This company is specialised on industrial chemicals. It was trademarked as Teflon in 1945 and yes, it was used by the military in artillery shell fuses, but also in the Manhattan Project.

Anyway, are you trying to convince us that if there wouldn't have been wars, the world wouldn't have evolved?
Picture of dushan56 achievements

common #12 #17 that is just the pathetic political excuse for killing people. what is the next thing in the line, back to good old Dr. Josef Mengele's methods? wake up mate, humanity don't need war for inventions and evolution

@LightAng3l If you want to know how and why things are invented watch a stroke of genius. war has nothing to do with it.

Hiroshima didn't safe any lives and the bomb after that on Nagasaki also didn't safe any lives. The first was uncalled for and the second was even worse. All to prevent russia to enter Japan. The only reason to nuke innocents in a country that has lost already.

radioactive cancer and deformities were also invented by war.

The bomb was invented AFTER they invented nuclear power as a new power source.

How is someone able to make you hold a rifle and shoot someone, or push that button? 7 million tons of bombs had been dropped on Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia during that war, if that was dropped on my country a ethnic cleansing would be performed. You are too gullible if someone is able to make you do that and not your own person. No wonder all the war veterans are psychologically messed up, probably after war they realize that they have been used to execute executions. Speaking from my point of view I would rather go to jail than shoot someone in a war.

war speech again #(removed comment) , or to match "call of duty" game?
to serve a country is to kill people right, and if you can't imagine killing human being, you don't love freedom, is that right also?
i wonder where did you take such a philosophy?
tell me something, imagine there is war, your country invades some other country, you are going to "serve" by killing an "enemy" ( and enemy is not a human being, right? ). will you be proud to tell your grand children how many "enemies" you did "take down"?
and for the record, you don't need to kill people to serve your country in the time of war, you can be in the service corps, kitchen, ambulance ( or you think that this services are not for real man )... there is always a choice if you wish to find one.
why you didn't think of than mate :( ?
are you so blood thirsty?

Hi Usanumber1/Oldphart , how are you ?

Doing well , I hope , during this construction downturn .

#(removed comment) According to the documentary about the life of Robert McNamara the general was a total achoholic and the alleged VC individual's murder (without trial) was a total publicity disaster . Nothing to be at all proud of .

#(removed comment) the soviets didn't invade Poland,Finland,or Norway in 1939-1940 . That was the Germans .

The Americans were on the same side as the Soviets (remember?)

It was only after the Americans lost the control of Berlin that the cold war started .

How did the Americans lose control of Berlin ?

Because the Soviet troops got there first .

How ?

Because they were more inclined to bravery and self sacrifice .

Oh , by the way , this video is part of a video called "Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam"

i see this as the bottom line:

if they ( "the enemy" )don't respect any conventions, and we fallow them in that disrespect( talking about "Unlawful enemy combatants" ) by execute them like animals, without a trial

then, where is the difference and the line between us and "the enemy"

for me personally, this difference is all that matters in every war

what do you think #(removed comment)

#42 that is the point, in every war solders fight with "the enemy", but at he same time there is another fight inside every solder on the field, between human and animal, and human is not always the winner.
#(removed comment) you are good in history, "US follows the Geneva convention rules" but you forget that us soldiers are soldiers like every other, vietnam war was good example of what i'm trying to tell you.
you know about crimes against civilians in the vietnam, do you?
just a sample:

* A November 1966 incident in which an officer in the Army's Fourth Infantry Division, severed an ear from a Vietnamese corpse and affixed it to the radio antenna of a jeep as an ornament. The officer was given a non-judicial punishment and a letter of reprimand.

* An August 1967 atrocity in which a 13-year-old Vietnamese child was raped by American MI interrogator of the Army's 196th Infantry Brigade. The soldier was convicted only of indecent acts with a child and assault. He served seven months and sixteen days for his crime.

* A September 1967 incident in which an American sergeant killed two Vietnamese children -- executing one at point blank range with a bullet to the head. Tried by general court martial in 1970, the sergeant pleaded guilty to, and was found guilty of, unpremeditated murder. He was, however, sentenced to no punishment.

* An atrocity that took place on February 4, 1968, just over a month before the My Lai massacre, in the same province by a man from the same division (Americal). The soldier admitted to his commanding officer and other men of his unit that he gunned down three civilians as they worked in a field. A CID investigation substantiated his confession and charges of premeditated murder were preferred against him. The soldier requested a discharge, which was granted by the commanding general of the Americal Division, in lieu of court martial proceedings.

* A series of atrocities similar to, and occurring the same year as, the "Tiger Force" war crimes in which one unit allegedly engaged in an orgy of murder, rape and mutilation, over the course of several months.

and this is only a sample, from vietnam war only...
Picture of dushan56 achievements

+1 45. dushan commented 11 years ago

#(removed comment) so "famous" My Lai Massacre was also part of that anti-war propaganda, and good old Rusty was just an exemplary officer, and you are 100% sure that nothing a like was happened in vietnam war? ( i did take a look at the wintersoldier articles )

please note, this is not "anti-usa speech", what i'm trying to tell is:

every known war have a stories similar to My Lai, and no one should ever talk about benefits of war, neither deny such acts of cruelty.

and #(removed comment) in the time of war you can't tell your soldiers: "Fight your enemy by his rules.", someone must draw the line between human and animal.

but again, you may believe that is the right thing to do, take some al qaeda terrorists for example and cut off their heads, because that is their rules of war, right, place them on the wall as trophy to...

no offence mate but this is where that kind of philosophy is leading...

#all

Im sure everyone would agree that war is cruel and the atrocities involved are stomach turning. I was very upset seeing that guy take one in the head in the vid. But the discussion over this vid would not be taking place if it werent for freedom of speech which we all enjoy as a result of horiffic past wars and the heros who died fighting for it. Also war does advance technology. The very thing we are all watching this vid on and having a discussion over ( The internet) was developed for military use. War is a horrible fact of life..Sad.. but true. Imagine if there had never been any wars EVER.. You would most probably of never been born to discuss anything.

Horrible vile Video but a fact of life.

#47 "Imagine if there had never been any wars EVER.. You would most probably of never been born to discuss anything."

this is a fact of life mate: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe." -Albert Einstein-
Picture of liverpoolboy16 achievements

#48
Well said dusham. Albert Einstein(My all time idol) was a well known pacifist but even he eventually subscribed to the view that the second World war was necessary.

For what ever reason , greed, hunger, jealously. power. the list goes on..MAN WILL KILL ITS FELLOW MAN. Its gone on since year dot and whats more frightning is that without qustion, it will happen on a grand scale again. Count the number of wars going on in the world today

http://www.nytimes.com/1988/06/03/opinion/25-wars-are-still-going-on.html

And thats just the Americans. Add this with all of the wars taking place plus all potential wars that are on the brink of kicking off between other countries then human stupidity does indeed becomes clear.

Its Human nature, im sure its hardwired into our brains to keep the human population stable. If as i stated there had never been any wars then our world would not sustain all those people who untimely died as a result and of course there offspring.

One of the most famous quotes is by plato.

"Only the dead have seen the end of war"

On a lighter note..If there were no wars, there would also be a massive hole in the film and news industries. I do enjoy a good war movie such as the Great Escape. >:)
