Ride the Beam

A pulse of laser light journeys towards generating 500 terawatts of ultraviolet energy, creating the temperatures and pressures found inside stars, giant planets and nuclear weapons.

What's the point? Creating nucrear fusion reactors?

the music was too "epic discovery of an island full of weird creatures" for this video
then the music changes to a song that makes me think of prince of persia (swords, arabic environnement, ...)

ah well, vid was pretty interesting, fusion is a very good way for creating energy

#1 simply put: yes
scientist all over the world are working on different ways of getting nuclear fusion going which if they get it to work would probably end our energy crisis

i'm studying chemical engineering to work at a petrochemical plant
if this shit works
does it mean i'll be out of the job?
since the world doesn't need petrol

In 2028, an asteroid will impact earth spreading 1000 km in radius, and in 2230, the same asteroid that destroyed the dinosaurs will hit earth again, and so the solution is to create a lazer that will destroy these asteroids b4 it destroys us :)

#7 actually, we'll run out of petrol anyway, probably before commercial use of fusion power. This kind of research usually takes decades to reach desirable results.

#10, we'll never run out of petrol. Not in our lifetime anyway and I doubt during yours or my great-great-great grandchildrens lives. Alternative fueling and energy systems will be in place long before this planet runs out of its resource in crude oil.

Cool clip :D

because if it isn't I'm sorry but ur gona have to kill yourself

#4 you cant create energy, only convert it from one type to another

I fail to see how this will end hunger and poverty around the world. Nevertheless, this is pretty interesting.

#6 im sorry, but i really dont see how this does anything other further the understanding of fusion and high energy physics.. it was my understanding that fusion was considered entirely unfeasible as a power supply as the initial energy investment is effin HUGE (to overcome the repulsive forces of hydrodgen nuclei) so its just not economical until we can get around the repulsive electromagnetism, which to my knowledge is a fundamental force. as an energy source, there are much more economical options. I mean some of the biggest lasers in the world are needed to trigger it here!

Though i could totally be wrong and i apologise if i am, i havent done physics in a few years!

Laser fusion consumes an awesome energy, much more than it produces, it is far from break even point.
Aneutronic fusion reactor is much more feasible, and is closer to a net gain.

#6: As you know, oil is only one of petrochemical products, plastics, chemical compounds etc are still needed as we don't know how to do them in any other way.

#20: Not entirely true. Yes, with fusion you need huge temperatures to ovecome that repulsion but once the critical temperature is reached, the process becomes self-sustaining and creates a lot more energy than what is needed to keep the fusion going. Just an example: the sun...

I have to say that IMO Thorium reactors (particularly MSR reactors) should be the way to go for now as the amount of nuclear waste and the properties of it are significally better than with conventional nuclear power plants.
