Piranha can't bite through bone. So your finger is quite safe. You will bleed and maybe spend 2 weeks to heal but you won't lose your thumb :)

i had a couple of small Piranha's and i could put my hands in with them when maintaining the tank, they grew and i got a bite from one.
it hurt enough for me not to put my hands in with them anymore.
i was sort of hoping the guy was gonna get a good bite... ah well we cant have it all our way eh

The guy over at the fish store had his thumb bitten off by a piranha many years ago. Dont mishandle these creatures since they will defend themselves. Of course the piranha was not that small. Some piranhas get quite big actually.

#11 They're good pets in that they're easy to keep in a large home aquarium, but they get pretty big, their colors fade and they're timid about eating in front of people. They sometimes eat each other, too, so there are a lot of people who have 1 big piranha left. 8-)
