What are your options in such a situation? It's pay or die. Isn't that what robbers say?

That is bloody nuts. I would be looking into premium health insurance if I lived there.

What happens is they cannot deny you the bare minimum of care to save your life, even if you cannot pay. The bill then comes in the mail and your credit is gone and the taxpayers end up paying for it anyway through government payments to hospitals. Yet people in America are upset and wondering who will pay for the healthcare reform. Morons, they are already paying for it and not getting proper care. U.S.A. = Unusually Stupid A$$h0135 (When majority rules stupid people are making all of the decisions) Go USA!!

The old health care debate again. In the US hospitals are required by law to treat ANY emergency whether you have insurance or not. They can't turn you away.
If you do have medical insurance, and most people DO have it , then the insurance company covers either all or most of the bill.If you are poor Medicaid covers you,and if you are at least 65 years old, Medicare covers you. The girl in this video ( which just might be fake ) probably paid little or nothing for her 3 days in intensive care and 20 vials of anti-venom. Intensive care usually costs about $15,000 a day , so I can't see $140,000 for this. My son spent 15 days in ICU after a car accident and it cost me nothing , insurance paid it all.
And guess what...we don't pay 50% of what we earn in taxes! Those high taxes you pay is what is paying for your crappy rationed health care in the UK which doesn't even cover dental care but at a minimum level. Gas is usually around $2.59 a GALLON including tax , not $7.00 a gallon with the vat included like in the UK. Most of Europe pays even more than that.
There is no free ride in this world....you pay one way or another.

What #18 said. It would cost $140,000 in other countries as well - but its paid through taxes, instead of insurance.
Not saying the system doesn't need adjustment, but come on people. Don't get all superior because the system works differently.
My dad used to work as a nurse anesthetist, and well over half the people where he worked never ended up paying anyways, insurance or not. That was money directly out of my father's pocket. Don't get all uppity talking about a system you know little or nothing about.

I live in Canada and even if I traveled to Russia, France, England, China, Japan and Italy, I AVOID traveling to the USA even with travel insurances.
The cost of health care over there is so insane that even private insurances won't cover all the cost. The premium on 140,000$ is enough to significantly damage your retirement fund.
America is pricing itself out of the tourism market.

There's probably something else going on here that we're missing - were they in an area that doesn't normally have rattlesnake antivenom? Was it freakishly expensive and she needed a lot of it?
I ask because I know someone who spent almost 2 months critically ill in an ICU, needed a transplant, and their costs were only slightly more than that. BTW - the vast majority of those costs were covered by their insurance.

You Americans can have your great nation for yourselves with health care like this.
I live in Croatia, and even though most Americans think that the whole Balkans is a poor place, I live in knowledge that no matter what happens to me, I am insured over the state health care provider and I will get proper medical attention for free.
The same goes for education in state colleges. My parents don't have to save money from the day that I was born just so they can send me to proper school.
So you just live in your little bubble and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars on one snake bite.

Holly crap !!! 140.000 $?? What the hell for? I rather cut my hand off or suck the venom out with a rusty pipe while someone pours lemon juice on my deformed hand than pay that much !
Damn... You can buy 3 regular houses in my country with that kind of money....you can buy a super car. WTF??

I have doubt in that cost. I almost feel like the video is make to have some sort of message. Maybe to change people's minds on Obama Care. I don't know but get real. Seeing how this guy video tapped everything, he should have pictured the bill.

#18, I get where you are coming from, but someone else made a good point when they stated that those countries also have almost free (if not completely free) colleges! I wouldn't mind my taxes going towards health care and college AT ALL. IT SHOULD BE A PUBLIC (not privately run) service that is provided to us. The only way to do that is with taxes, obviously (unless in some future we don't use money anymore). In the end I think the country would be better off with that type of system. Our health care is NOT the best in the world, our education IS DEFINITELY not the best in the world. Yet we pay the most out of any other country for both!!
Also, you stated that most people in the U.S. are insured, but there are THOUSANDS dying every day in the U.S. because they don't have insurance. It's a huge problem and just because 50, 60, or even 70% of Americans might have insurance, that doesn't void the fact of how many don't and die for ridiculous reasons (even though we have the largest economy)! People were really saddened by 9/11, right? Well that loss of life has been and still IS happening EVERY DAY in America; and it's OUR FAULT for not WAKING UP and allowing this type of policy and economics to go continue!
Not to mention that insurance companies are literally the epitome of evil. They NEED people to be sick and dying in order to survive and make DISGUSTING profits from it. This needs to be a service just like other public services. We can't just let everything be privatized, and health care is one of those things!

Wow!! That is pricy! I can't believe people who are against the health care system where everyone should afford to be healthy. In Sweden where we pay over half our money (Income Tax + VAT + extra taxes like road taxes and such) to the government the idea of paying a health bill of that size is both scary and awkward. I'm fine paying my taxes actually. I could even raise the bar a little more to help the poor unemployed swedes who have started taking drugs since the economy went downhill. Raise my taxes to make the life a little less horrible for my friends.

Funny how Americans seem to think that the tax rate is a lot higher in Canada. Obviously we have to pay more taxes in order to benefit from free health care, virtually free higher education (virtually because is costs so little), 7$/day daycare and other freebies like that. The fact and the matter is that a Canadians who makes 50,000$ only pays 3% to 5% more on its income than an American with the same income. You also have to realize that most Americans also pay income tax to their state and municipality.
Taking into account what they also have to pay their health care company, I would not be surprised if, after all the marbles are counted, most Americans ended up much richer if they lived in Canada.

#24 don't worry American's haven't heard for Balkans or at least most of them, simply say Europe even thought not all countries on it are in the European union. Moving on #32 what the fuck??? that is the lamest comment I have ever seen! $140,000 is really to much for this, If the health care cover this I agree that paying for health care is kinda good, but really $140,000 ... $15,000 for antidote (in lineage is almost free) $10,000 a day for the room, good price, but I think in Hilton hotels is a bit cheaper... 20 guyz from the staff monitoring around an hour a day each, lets say 200 hours were wasted on this patient and salary per hour is around $200 (good huh?) which makes $40,000, so that is around $100,000 for everything (I calculated the sum with a broken calculator though, but it is definitely less ). I would advise you to take the sale receipt and check it as they might have added coffee that you never received! :-)
