I think it is the same effect as you see in games. You focus on the driver in front of you because you want to pass him somewhere. Because of this you will try to match your speed with his speed and then a little bit faster to get closer on him. BUT whenever the driver in front of you drives to fast you will too. and because of that i think it is possible to get an accident like this. I don't think the first bike crash spilled something. Does it make sense of what im suggesting it could be or do i sound quite stupid? :D.

#18 No, this was the second lap of the race. On the first lap, one of the last riders into that corner crashed and spilled oil. I watched the race. You are right though, a rider can be fooled into going too deep by a rider in front of them. And they are usually called riders, but colour commentators often use the word "Pilot" in any form of motorsport to make the association of speed.
