I think that there is a lack of mention of the fact that it is the extremes of each perspective that leads to serious issues, not just the existence, with possible exception for the present hedonist perspective. I have countless hours with video games. Where did I learn social skills? I studied people every day in high school. I should have known more sooner, but some people were more worried about medicating me so I wasn't so darn active. I love to learn, be creative, meet new people, and live for the future. I also love to know that when I have down time I can play any game I feel like, and often I prefer social games either multi-player with my real life friends or group work over the internet with people I know I can trust to work for the good of the group rather than the individual. I don't think I'm a long shot. I think there are millions of people like me who seek balances in future and present. We know that it will be more difficult to maintain both. We are tired of life not being challenging.

I hope this video can give a little weak up call. There are so many students that don't want to go on with there studies while they can achieve so much more. I think it's best to be future orientated but still enjoy the present. So you could say that you have to find a balance between being orientated on the future present but also past.

Damn this video took so much time to load ! I can't be waiting for that !

Joking :D ...

I have patience and I wait in line at the post office, though I would have liked it to be faster. I'm not a workaholic... guess that's why I'm poor :( .. ohh no ..wait. It's because I live in a country that's full of people stealing from other people and nothing ever gets done.

Am I too old fashioned in this present day?

Makes you think.

@kutsuke

I concur. Most people nowadays are concerned with the extremes. I have often believed that the main problem surrounding polarizing issues is the difference in the threshold everyone has for each extreme. I would think most people tend to be in the middle they just don't know it.

At around 6:30 in the video, he's talking about classrooms. This is why video games are good. The students will demand classes that allow them to learn more by giving them more control. They will then teach each other and may even gather new information the world has never seen before.

Also, what is the point of the future if you cannot enjoy it when it becomes past? What is the point of productivity when it just breeds itself to no benefit of man?

#18 There are such classes. PBL -> Problem Based Learning. Groups of people working together to solve a problem. The great thing about PBLs is that they don't only teach knowledge but also ways to apply knowledge.

Very fascinating clip. I am probably one of those "past" people. When i went to school computers and games were on the rise(back in early to late 90's). I was quite social, had a lot of friends but i didnt not look to the future. To me life was about the moment. I never had the crave to "learn" more or have a career. Now its been 12 years since school ended. During these years i barely have any social connection with the world, no real friends, just online friends. I still play games and i enjoy it even more so than when i were younger. The problem is that i doubt i can ever be the same person i was back in school. Ive changed too much.

The school "system" didnt work for me. In a way i guess that is why i am where i am today. I believe as humans we all crave knowledge and to become better at something. The problem these days is the motivation. It just doesnt exist, it doesnt work with the technology we have today. So yeah, i understand why so many people drop out of school.

Philip Lombardo just like Steven Pinker and Hans Rosling are the best at explaining things so complex that most of us wouldn't even try to read.

Well there's some kind of truth in this speech. But you can't put everyone in the same bag.
If i take my own example, since i can remember I played video games with my friends and then online, and certainly for more than 10 000 hours in total ... and i'm aware of the world.
I'm Phd in management and I built a company ... but still continuing to play.
I think the most important thing is the fundamentals your parents/life teach you : Be aware of your surounding, think before trusting.
As he said : the notions of good and bad are not the same for everyone.

Wow I read a couple of the first comments and read the LAST one which is #22 , Thank you for putting it in those words MWAK.

I thought of commenting on the statistical fact of what race or races have the tendency to be oblivious in the art of RAISING A CHILD who end up Shooting the FUCK out of their classmates and teachers, but I honestly don't want to sound racist so I'm actually going to just say this.. It doesn't matter what race you are, it is far more complicated than what this video has shown us.. the ultimate key in the outcome of a person is how they are raised (Father mother/ Family) It takes a village to raise a child, things aren't always perfect... families get broken up or young people have children and aren't able to catch up to their kids growing up too fast so they aren't able to raise them the right way etc. etc. etc... I Think a lot of you can agree on the fact that those of us who grew up respecting our parents and maybe even fearing them a lil (lol) Are better people NOW than those punks out there who were unfortunate to be ignored by them or having broken homes etc. etc... This subject is so complex it's going to be one of our biggest issues in the future.. It's a shame humanity is too immature to begin trying to make a change, There are so many people on earth right now and in a decade or so people are going to start waking up and realizing that they are beginning to resemble to RATS... just multiplying like idiots... I'm sorry this rant can go on for hours especially when uve had a lil somethn to drink!

Thx #23, also you may find that the speech he his taking is very oriented and well made.
If you read psychology book, like C.G. JUNG, you will find that mind and ideas are not only comming from the point of vue of someone facing the time.
Many (all?) people are more than future or past oriented, you can't take this video as a fact, it's a small piece of a puzzle with very extremly fast and small conclusions

If you really want to understand what this man is talking about you need to read about the collective uncouncious (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_unconscious) and also a good book called : Transformation of the Psyche (C.G. JUNG), that is a very good one for people seeking for self developpement, jung-ian approch of incouncious or even mythological facts.

This video is a nice opening to mass pychology anyway.

The idea that people who focus on the present are only bad is ridiculous. Yes only studying the past is limited as it can only go so far if at all anywhere in helping in the future the random nature of life means that the past as a predicter is really not the case. However, focusing on the future is also not the way to go. The unpredictable nature of life means that looking to the future and planning is mostly redundant this leads to society hedging bets and hoping for a particular outcome which is beyond control, essentially gambling. This leads to dissapointment and conflict and anger arising out of unfullfilled desires. The complexities of life mean that the only really viable way for existence is to be present and aware NOW. Adapting to present conditions allows people to make the best decision at that time no amount of planning or preperation can be totally effective given what the universe can throw at us. Obviously planning to an extent is a reality however it is best understood that the plan is just that and is not a reality untill it happens. It is the case that we put to great expectations on the completion of things which have not happened yet.

Who knows the sky may fall on our heads in a minute
