The idea is crossing the water, using the pole. they do this in Holland; Local sport.Is known as fierljeppen or bongelwuppen. Do not ask... :D

They even have an english wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fierljeppen. If I'm not mistaken, the bit where they climb up is so they can reach a longer distance.

I'd say half-fail. Could have been a lot worse if he would hit that dirt with all of his body... Still looked very painful though. >:)
