Curiosity alone asks the question, where do we come from".

But the question that should be asked is, where are we going to"

When you try to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity you get String theory, there is even more than 4 dimensions maybe...

The Big Bang theory...
First there was nothing, then it exploded.

Just as convincing as the preachings of every religion. If there is absolutely no proof, let's make up a theory and convince everyone it is right.

Astrophysics and mathematics in this sense are mesmorising. It leaves me in awe at least. Stephen Hawking's 'A brief history of time' changed the way i think about the world... I recommended it to anyone who found this intriguing.

i love those people who state "all theory, no proof"...wich mostly are people that claim god is real and human didnt evoluted from monkeys..like #6 .. who got more realistic theorys? Sciences or Religion? Dont get me wrong..dont start a flame war now...but honestly..science got theorys wich can be tested by time..

Isn't it hard to find the things that you can't see? It's just like something I just heard. We have just discovered 60% of life in the oceans. Where did they get that percentage? From a random test? You can't research what you can't experience. :|

And think back..before the "Big Bang"..there had to be something...and before that something there had to be something else...and so on...thats why we call the universe "infinite"..since there ALWAYS had to be something before...even in case of gods..there HAS to be something before them where they came from...universe is infinite..thats when our meassure "time" kicks in..so summary...what was in past before past? Or wich god created god?

#10 - people need to explore the realms of science and philosophy that they excel at and are in tune with. Someone like Einstein was obviously brilliant, but that does not mean that he would have been as effective in medicine as he was in physics. There is no point in telling an astrophysicist to go help the microbiologists. There are times when an accidental discovery in one discipline aids science in another, but it can't be forced.

Well #6 thats exactly why this is a theory, because they have data, they analyze it, test it, make hypothesis so they can come up with a possible explanation and thats a theory. So all theories begin with data, facts or proofs and more facts are looked for to ad more consistency to the theory or enunciate a new and better one.
On the other hand when you believe something and you look up for data to support your belief and you think you have found an explanation, sorry but calling it a theory its an error, if you create an institution around a set of beliefs then you call it religion.
WE DO NOT EVOLVED FROM MONKEYS, rather we share a common ancestor, like with a cousin with whom we share a common grandparent. 8-) 8-)

Maybe we can think of the universe like a heart - instead of "banging big time" it may have just gone systolic and after some time could go diastolic before going systolic again.

Now, who created it and how exactly does it function is merely above our level of understanding - can the cat understand the evening news its owner watches? And even if it is a really intelligent cat and it somehow manages doing so - will the fleas on its back understand the latest developments in politics? God or no God - it is not up to us to know. If we did understood everything, we ourselves would become gods.

pragmatic people would start colonizing Mars and Europa, and the Moon, and further on: just to make sure humanity starts getting its feet for leaving the Solar system one day: theory is useful, but ..not enough. max

It all just shows how "primitive" we currently are. Maybe in a few thousand years we finally make some progress. We maybe even encounter alien life far superior to us, or the other way around. It will happen, it is just a matter of time. Right now we're still basically stuck on our planet so no life form would be even remotely interested in us, except our planet if they would be similar to creatures on earth.

In the end its all very fascinating a shame that nothing will probably happen in our life time or our children's and their children's life time.

#8 #14 im not religous, and i respect your veiws. my veiw is that they are all theroy and there is no real proof, whos to say there ever was a big bang, we wasnt their to see it. i just think whatever happened it the past is irrelivent and its our future we need to think about.
i dnt want to start a war either, this is just my veiw.

fuck this if u can, u can imagine infinite dimensions and if u have the knowledge, u can do the physics and mathematics for them...only to realize that your understanding of the infinite value (that sleeping 8 char) is yet not enough..heh kinda depressing

#3,

contrary to what you are saying, the key difference is that science will make changes to their theories and ideas while religion will always stick to the idea of a "higher being" known as "god" (no matter what evidence or discoveries are made).

Doesn't mean i'm able to do the maths but hey if you can't grasp that when he explain it for a 8yo then i suggest you sell your computer and by yourselfs a dog. You'll be happier and it'll be one less moron around here.

(I know it's quite harsh but hey don't say something like that in public if you don't want to get it hard)

#23 the devil is in the details really.
For instance what people say and what their texts actually teach is usually really different. Chalk that up to human greed and ambition. But how many of the people here can actually say they've even read whatever religious text they are ragging on. Chat THAT up to busy lifestyles and cutting corners.
Science is the same thing. And people are going to abuse that out of greed and ambition too. TNT is a great example
But sadly science doesn't teach us why to live our lives, just how.

#3 you're retarded. Dead set. You sound like a typical martyr.

The only reason the big bang has been established as the basis for everything is because all theories that have been successful in describing observations in our universe and predicting them need a singularity for them to work. Which is the point at which everything breaks down into an inifinte point of density.

And also, background microwaves have been detected all over the universe no matter which direction our telescopes face, showing there is energy cooling down from the singularity.
Also, almost every distant star observed are red shifted, which mean they are moving away from us.
Educate yourself buddy, it opens your mind to the wonders around you...

Scientifically it is not irrelevant what happened in the past #20, because it shaped out present and will affect the future too, they are not separate entities. Studying these theories therefore makes a lot of sense. Where the past shouldn't matter, but many of us make it matter, is with emotional issues, like you're not speaking with someone for years because they offended you.
This is an excellent video, explaining difficult theories and putting things into question, in other words, make you think.
