They are very lucky that the gas vapor did not ignite as it billowed out. Some of those people nearby would have been roasted. :S

Running towards something without taking a moment to observe the situation is, imho, not a very clever thing to do anyway...In this day and age, an explosion of any kind could mean something pretty grave...
What good would you be if you ran to the scene seconds after, only to be caught up in another, second blast, and become a victim yourself?
I'd definitely think about the peops in my car first, jerk them to safety and then consider walking back to help others...After changing my pants :O cos Gawd that would scare the shiz outta me :S
