This is a really sobering film, The really sad thing is that it happened at a time before the Iron curtain came down when the Soviet Union looked at the west with suspicion, If they had asked for international help many of these people could have been saved. It was the same as when the Kursk sank, the west had rescue submersibles that could have saved the submariners, but again the Russians wouldnt let the west intervene.

Oh my god. Those kids... And that helicopter crash...
I'm well aware of this accident. I live in Norway, and Tjernobyl isn't that far away... But still make quite an impression om me watching videos like this.

A Normal human being exposed to radiation will Lose hair quickly, Thyroide gland is affected because it's susceptible to radioactive iodine, the blood's lymphocyte cell count will be reduced leaving the victim more susceptible to infection, damage to the intestinal tract lining will cause nausea, bloody vomiting and diarrhea, reproductive tract cells (sex) become sterile, and
intense exposure leads to brain cells fammage or immediate damage to small blood vessels and probably cause heart failure and death directly.

the worst is what their children inherit from theirs damaged DNA ... and suffer every second of their life.

We suck

what a mess... and where do you think soviet government looked for people to clean it up? Amongst themselves? Of course not - they were capturing men from all occupied countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine etc) .They were after my father as well, but fortunately he managed to hide from those morons. There were about 10 people that my family knew, who were sent there - absolutely nobody returned.

This is a "little" accident, just think of the nuclear weapons US and Russia alone have today, if a nuclear war starts the whole world will look like Chernobyl :|

And the most scary thing of all the "cover" is starting to leak and needs to be "replaced"/"repaired" or whatever. Or else...well....not good...for at least Europe.

The reactor didnt explode ffs! That wouldve been an even bigger desaster !!

This makes the whole thing not less terrible though. The surrounding facts and stories are shocking but very interesting and if you dont know all the details I advise you to google for a documentary asap ! Especially the holding back of information by the authorities and the measures taken to contain and "repair" are a sad testament of what humans are capable of...

The ghost town at the end is the actual town next the reactor. Its called pripyat. Interesting read as well. Tschernobyl is pretty far away.

I remember when I was a kid my parents wouldnt allow us to consume dairy products or play in the rain because of the massive cloud of fallout resulting from the accident. Considering I grew up in northern Germany I cant even imagine what it mustve felt like for the polish and ukrainian people after the Russian administration finally admitted what had happened.

#7 Captured or not, the truth is those brave men sacraficed their lifes for a greater good. With out them this catastrophe would be a lot worse. Many of them did not know that there will be readition and they will die, they though it will be a usual fire.

It was indeed a horrendous tragedy, the loss of life a brutal crime and the after effects on those poor people a heart rending shame. However because of this incident (and others) great strides have been made in the safety of operation at these plants, which gives me hope for the continuation of our species since we will doubtlessly need them in the near future. As well as this amazing bit of kit (http://www.snotr.com/video/5196). The sad fact of this event is the powers that were had a tiger by the tail and did not know exactly how big and hungry it was, and because of that horrors have been visited on these people of such a magnitude that they can never be undone.. I can only hope we've learned the CORRECT lessons from this.

here is the map showing the fallout range of caesium 137 around whole europe...

From a study done by ThinkQuest.org in 1997 on the effects of the radioactive fallout in Europe:

"One of the great tragedies of the accident was that the Soviet government tried to cover it up. Clouds of fallout were traveling towards major population centers such as Minsk, and no one was warned. No one outside the Soviet Union knew about the accident until two days later, when scientists in Sweden detected massive amount of radiation being blown from the east."

"The effects of the disaster at Chernobyl were very widespread. The World Health Organization (WHO) found that the radiation release from the Chernobyl accident was 200 times that of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombs combined. The fallout was also far-reaching. For a time, radiation levels in Scotland were 10,000 times the norm. 30 lives were directly lost during the accident or within a few months after it. Many of these lives were those of the workers trying to put out the graphite fire and were lost from radiation poisoning. The radiation released has also had long-term effects on the cancer incidence rate of the surrounding population. According to the Ukrainian Radiological Institute over 2500 deaths resulted from the Chernobyl incident. The WHO has found a significant increase in cancer in the surrounding area. For example, in 1986 (the year of the accident), 2 cases of childhood thyroid cancer occurred in the Gomel administrative district of the Ukraine (this is the region around the plant). In 1993 there were 42 cases, which is 21 times the rate in 1986. The rate of thyroid cancer is particularly high after the Chernobyl accident because much of the radiation was emitted in the form iodine-131, which collects in the thyroid gland, especially in young children. Other cancer incidence rates didn't seem to be affected. For example, leukemia was no more prevalent after the accident than before."
Thousands more people have died or suffered as a result since the study was done.

and there we are, building electro-cars and using more and more electronical devices.
Guess how we can satisfy the hunger for electrical power...

Tschernobyl might be just the first of one of those catastrophes, if we do not do change our powersources.

Sad Sad situation that was and still is , these days you can get guided tours of Prypiat and witness the ghost town for your self,

What allways amazed me was the fact they only closed the last reactor in 2000 they kept the plant open for another 14 year after that happened.

#24 yeap, no relation: mea culpa, as it may have been seen co-related; yet my point is only targeted at why some 'concept vehicles' never made it to 'market', and that particular Comanche, despite a Black Hawk, looked too fragile to be built (have read it can't retreive the link), 10x.

#13, most of them didn't know that they were signing their death sentence.
I don't deny that they're brave, they really are, but what saved the world is the lies of the Russian Administration who sent these people to die and save the world without knowing it...

That's why govs are dirty .. but sometimes you really need to get dirty for the sake of all.

Tjernobyl was a disaster of tremendous proportions.

Thank god for technology! Nuclear power is now both clean and safe. The only argument environmentalists have against Nuclear power is Tjernobyl. An accident that happened more than 20 years ago. As if there was absolutely no advance in technology in those 20+ years.

We must look at Tjernobyl to both grief and learn. The sacrifices of the pasts mistake save lives now.

A huge disaster, with immense human and environmental toll. However... the video is little more than "deformity porn". The soundtrack doesn't help. A video like this diminishes the real horror.

Since the disaster, thousands of young people from the Chernobyl area and fallout zone have been given medical "vacations" for free in Cuba (Google "Chernobyl tarará" or see http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=46754 and http://www.medicc.org/publications/medicc_review/0505/top-story.html)

It kinda lost it's value when the techno music started.

Also, am I the only one who noticed the time it exploded? 01:23:40. 1234? I wouldn't be suprised if this was some sort of test that went out of control.

#29 clean and safe? Not really no, it still leaves tons of radioactive waste that needs to be stored somewhere. Nuclear energy will not be "clean" until we master nuclear fusion. :(
Picture of Limberg43 achievements

0 33. Limberg commented 14 years ago

The biggest problem was the design of early russian nuclear plants, watch a documentary and it should be clear. Newer western reactors like the CANDU design have safety features to prevent such things from happening.

But still, nothing is perfect :S.
