This is a AV8-B Harrier It looks like and these beasts can Land and take off vertically, judging by the sound it made in the beginning my only guess would be the vertical thrusters malfunctioned or he was coming down too fast.... Good thing the pilot is okay... and there goes 30 Million Dollars :'(

This happened a year ago in Afghanistan
1st source "A British Harrier fighter jet crashed in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, injuring the pilot, NATO said. The alliance said in a statement that the aircraft had made an emergency landing at Kandahar Airfield in the south of the country. The pilot ejected and was believed to have suffered only minor injuries. There were no other? casualties."
2nd source: "A British Harrier GR9A jet crashed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said. The pilot is believed to have suffered only minor injuries when he ejected from the aircraft before it came down at Kandahar airfield at about 10:30am local time. It is believed there were no other casualties. It is thought that the RAF pilot ejected after he could not land the aircraft properly. The landing gear was fully extended"

It's interesting to me how the seat ejects high enough for the parachute to open, whilst being 3 feet from the ground.

#4 Maybe he had to take his things from the dashboard: his cigs + lighter, groceries, stereo faceplate, etc.

#4 #7 #12 #13

The most probable reason for him waiting to eject is the following;

The seat is propelled out of the aircraft by an explosive charge or rocket motor.
The pilot typically experiences an acceleration of up to 20–22 g Compression fractures of vertebrae were (and are) a recurrent side effect of ejection, and are often a career-ending injury for the pilot.

#14 I remember a statement of a pilot who had used his ejection seat once, and he said the next time he would rather crash than use it again.

When things go wrong it's always best to wait as long as you can before ejecting. However you need to eject while the plane is still moving. There have been at least two US Marine aviators killed when they've parachuted into the fireball of their wrecked plane.

The problem for this pilot must have started very close to the start of the vid - he's not had anywhere suitable to jettison his tanks and GBUs.

It is a Martin baker ejection seat. capable of Zero-Zero

Zero altitude
Zero Speed

and still get you away from the plane

If you look at the landing gear before impact you will see only the left wheels are down. There's your reason for the crash.
