While the usability per step is nice, wherever I take escalators, one tends to be broken. Luckily the second pair can be switched to go upstairs. In this case, the entire thing will be out of order.

The reason why the current escalators are mostly in straight lines, is not limited by technology, but chosen that way because it is the most efficient way to travel, a straight line...
