It is a Dutch "sport" folklore/tradition called Polsstokhoogspringen or Fierljeppen.

#(removed comment) you say redneck, but this 'sport' has been practised by Frysians for over a milennium. It was first used by farmers to leap small channels to get from field to field.
I have done this once, and it was fun and an excercise. Therefore it's a sport :-)

I understand that fast climbing and jumping properly is the key in doing this but to me it looks like the hardest part now is the landing. Looks like 5 or 6 meters (6 yards) of free fall into sandy ground. IMHO they should make the landing zone softer to get better records now.

#9 the landing is a bunch of sand. what could be softer?! this takes some serious skill to do. i know i couldn't get a foot up that pole.

Did you notice how close he still is to the current overall record holder?
He still holds the junior record since 2006...
