You don't Associate M&M's with Managers and Meetings... i used to love M&M's. now everytime i see them i'll be thinking about Managers and Meetings...

"You can't ask someone to be really creative in 15 minutes" -So true.

As a programmer, I can really relate to being torn from the "zone" for some unnecessary meeting or distraction, and having a hard time jumping back in later.

Pro tip: Block out sections of your calendar weeks in advance for some real work.

Works only as long as people are self-motivated and very much willing to work. also called the y-theorie of douglas mcgregor. But what if people are like the x.

But managers should give it a try. it will work ;)

In my organization there are no Meetings, we all use IM and most problems are resolved by a quick conversation between 3 - 4 persons....

But I still can't say that I want to go to the office to get something done :)

He is right one some things but his thing about facebook and twitter , what a idiot "is this china" i have seen people in offices were i work sitting for hours behind facebook doing nothing because there idiots and addicted to facebook. You DONT need facebook , twitter , Youtube at bloody work and thank god its blocked.

Not talking to each other is a retarded idea , Email is distracting and so is IM , ya you can quit im and ignore some one who needs you help , not answer an email and have some one just wait there for hours doing no work. sorry this guy does not have a clue and thinks he knows every office and company is the same.

Face to face talking is some times the ONLY way to get a message across or get things done. All this modern crap is some times so hindering people just leave stuff for hours because they can and its wasting hours of time they could be getting things done.

I guess he has never managed a company or a project. He seems to think that the business world revolves around the individual and their little perspective. Management is managing time and information in a manner to keep all activities moving along. I guess an orchestra does not need to practice and work together. And why do they need a conducter?

Unless your job is well defined and limited in impacts to other activities you have to communicate. If things are that mechanical, it may be a job for a robot. That way the job will get done with no problems or disruptions. That robot would also not bother the other robots and maybe help them do a better job with supporting experiences or ideas. "Not my job!"

People need to meet face to face when discussing situations. You learn a lot by watching facial and body movements. I love you means more when it is said face to face even though the IM or email says it.

Again, if your job is mechanical, interaction is not as important. Have you called a help line to solve some problem that you have and been frustrated with the experience? Why is it that many times the person you talk to does not seem to grasp your problem? They have a script that they follow. Your problem has to fit their predetermined template. Don't you dare have a problem that doen't fit their solution!

This guy needs to go to some mountain top and think about it some more.

Problem is that 95% of work or jobs are under total capitalistic leadership where people forgot to think and be creative, so managers must push them to achive wanted productivity monitored by the system. Sad but look around you.

#6 It is true that what the speaker said on the video can't happen all the time. There are some meetings that are important and have priority and stuff. However, what he said is not entirely false neither. I have been into so many meetings that at the end are completely waste of time.

#12 I understand what you are saying. It still depends on what work means. As I briefly tried to explain above, it depends on the work tasks. If your primary task is routine in nature, meetings can be a waste of time. If the process of your job is stable, does not change, and is as efficient as is possible not much need to talk about it. However many jobs deal with a dynamic world where knowledge is key to success. Some jobs require understanding subtle changes or responding to current events or situations. I guess the talk did not seem like it had a team build feel to me. We need more controlled interaction and I know from 32 years of consulting in a wide range of industries and companies that most people are not disciplined enough to keep moving when working alone and miss out on the pulse of the company operation.
