There's no safe distance. We put a small propane tank in a bonfire in an open field. Once it bursted, it went straight for us. We were at least 70m away :S

They must have first set it on fire with gasoline to make sure that the propane ignited when shot instead of just propelling the cylider around like a missile.

To be correct: They shoot a propane tank thats on fire. Shooting a propane tank will only make a hole in it. Need a flame or something to make it burst into flames, high power rifle has nothing to do with it.
