#only in america can a guy with a 400hp motor , winter tires , and 4 wheel drive manage to slip down what seems to be a very slight hill , Pure stupidity

This is a perfect example that shows that americans are bunch of f****ing idiots/a**holes/d***kheads. not only did they not have the wits of not trying to go up the hill from the pile of cars at the bottom, they also did not bother to tell the drivers who were attempting to go up to not do it. and they filmed it as well. and you can hear the camera guy giggling while filming a car trying to go up the hill. I would have been at the bottom blocking the road or warning drivers, not like those idiots....

The Cadillac was the only dude smart enough to buy winter tires >:)
But sereously is it just me or does 80% of Americans use summer tires in the winter ? ok, a normal winter tire (without spikes) over here (Norway) cost 300-400$, but its worth every buck. I rather have good tires then paying for those repairs every winter :D
I had a honda prelude, and now a volvo s60 wich arn't good cars on snow. Havn't been close to get stuck like this anywhere. But hey.. the winters in Norway are not anywhere near this bad.... they are much worse.
But hey, we are vikings, its in our blood ;)

Should have a sign at the bottom of the hill "Caution Falling cars ahead!"
Most people think that since they have 4x4, they are don't have to get snow tires. It might help with getting up a hill... :S but not around a corner, or at a stop sign.

traction control can be a bitch in this weather, believe it or not. I actually turn it off in the winter, but you have to have good control with the clutch and throttle. too much throttle and you are screwed.
@ 1:42 the traction control chokes the engine, resulting in the car stopping, and he is screwed.

#14 Clearly you do not know what ABS does and how it effects your car. All those cars prolly got ABS. ABS pulses the break instead of locking them, however it's not impossible to still lock the breaks. ABS makes it possible to steer somewhat when fully engaging the break-pedal. Im pretty amazed by your stupidity to not know such a basic fact.

#17 All of those cars sliding downhill have locked down wheels? How do you think they should safely slide down, when car control is reduces to 0??? I am amazed about your stupidity btw, writing a comment like that.

#19 You the clever man instead of these nonsenses would inform us as by means of ABS it is possible to avoid slipping on an ice. You the unique person on a planet who can do it. Most likely you are not able to drive the car at all.

What's with the anti Americanism? Does driving like an idiot in the snow or the "no one else can but I CAN DO IT" mentality only pervade from America? Is your country somehow immune from idiots, idiot drivers or general stupidity and this only exclusive to America? Forgive me but, to all those with anti-American comments, your words smack of elitism and a true lack of intelligence. In my experience, this type of thinking really stems from jealousy... But that's not the case here is it?... no... Of course not.

Why are people so unsympathetic and stupid? I would have put road blocks so people wouldn't keep coming because I know I can't "warn" them, they're retards, you have put barriers. Instead people just stand around and record more carnage, I have people. Damn retarded schizophrenic monkeys.

#19 Do you even posess a driving licence? Have you ever driven a car with ABS and fully engaged the break pedal? If you have you would know the wheels still lock up, but are released as a pulse so you can steer the car. You can still lock the wheels, but thats not the problem in the video because they do not have wheels fitted for snow and ice, it does not matter if the wheels are locked or not you're still only going to slide on the ice. Don't be such an internethero.
Picture of TitvsCaivs46 achievements

-2 30. TitvsCaivs commented 10 years ago

#29 I do posess a driving license for the last 7 years and drove around 500thousand km's. Don't tell me that you can lock down the wheels with ABS, because you can't (of course not considering the milisecond locks between the releases). And I truly believe that being able to steer the car even by a downhill "slide" would have made a big difference in the outcome.
BTW In my past driving career I have had both cars with and without ABS ESP and so forth. A have had not one full ABS braking situations. And as last but not least, I'm not trying to be an internet hero of any kind. My 2 cents.

p.s. the only steering you have without ABS on full lock is gravity and the angle of the hill.

Picture of snotraddict44 achievements

0 36. snotraddict commented 10 years ago

#14 No, alot of older American cars are not standard with ABS until recently. It was an option on the higher end cars but not your entry and mid level cars.

#17 Look again. Most of the cars are older cars and most are low end cars. The first one heading down without sliding, it's hard for me to tell, but it looks like a Subaru or something like that, all wheel drive ABS etc. The Cadillac, high end car would also have ABS, but most of the cars that crashed would not have ABS.

A lot of trucks don't have ABS either.

Not sure how an ABS equipped car would perform after going uphill, losing traction and then skidding backward downhill. Anyone know?

Yes snow rated tires are a huge asset in this type of weather and anyone that lives in areas that are routinely hit like this should buy a set, but a lot of cars now come with All Season type tires, coupled with ABS (if equipped) are more than adequate on a slight slope as this in moderate climates.

+4 37. sux2bu commented 10 years ago

A quick search will demonstrate that this type of vehicle carnage happens in any country that has snow and ice conditions. When the temperature drops to a point where slush turns to glare ice, nothing but studs or chains do any good. No type of "snow"tire will get traction on solid ice, especially on a hill.

#31 First of all, I'm from Romania, so you have an idea.
I drove in these order.
Dacia Nova 1.6 GLI 101HP 2004-2005
Dacia Solenza 1.4 MPI 85HP 2005-2007
VW Golf MK4 1.9TDI 105HP 2007-2009
VW Golf MK5 1.9TDI 140HP 2009-

...only the last two where/are equipped with both ABS and ESP.]

What model/make is the car at 0.12, looks pretty new to me...

#31 VW
#36 ABS has been around since 1971 and chrysler where one of the first with the prototypes so dont come here and shit like "there are very old cars in the video, there is no car in the video prior to atleast 1985. The trucks are 4x4 and heavier but I know for a fact that Ford and Dodge equip their cars with ABS, Chevrolet takes extra for it.

The only thing stupider than trying to drive up that hill is thinking that the ice is super effective because the drivers are from a specific country. The truth is citizens of USA are from all over the world. People immigrate for the chance to achieve their dreams and freedom from oppression. Some of those people aren't educated on how to drive on ice, but that has nothing to do with their geographic location.
Picture of TitvsCaivs46 achievements

ohhh yeah, good that we have the usa, otherwise no ones dream could be achieved. and we all live in oppression, only freedom we have is handed to us from the us. :O

#43 Glad you finally realized that. What kind of freedoms did you have under Soviet rule? You must know that the Soviet downfall was due to them trying to keep up with the US in weapons and space exploration. But you were just a little kid when that happened so you might not know.

#41 According to the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS:

"... Availability has grown steadily in more recent years. Antilocks were standard on 1985 S class Mercedes models and standard or optional on about 30 domestic and foreign car models during the 1987 model year. Availability soared to 90 models the next year. Currently, antilocks are on about 89 percent of all new cars sold and 99 percent of light trucks." dated December 2010

To summarize, not readily available, or actually available but not commonly installed as standard equipment on most cars until recently.
