The jokes are only 'shocking' because of the context. They get Ricky to do this because they know he will rip the piss out of everyone, and following the show there will be constant media blah blah blah about whether he went too far or not. It all just raises the profile of the awards. In roundabout way, he's actually pandering to them by saying stuff like this.
Ricky Gervais is a hero of mine but this stuff has nothing to do with it. Also, Karl has a head like a fucking orange.

Its easy to bite some ankles but I have to agree with #1 on this one. Same as the scary movie series for me, only recognizing it doesnt make it funny

tyipical english humour that people are taking the wrong way. it is was everyone thinks but dont dare say.
But i do think ricky is over rated, and without a script completely useless. Look back when he had to stall for ten minutes at Princes Diana memorial concert at Wembley stadium. any real stand up comedian shouldn't have a problem with this but he did.

Thats some epic humor, an actual hero. I guess all "stars" poked by his speech must have enough sense of humor to take it as a joke, most of them must know what is irony... and they have enough money anyway not to care much about what the others are thinking about them... and many actors are doing one or several shitty movies in their career, most of them "assumes" those mistakes so no biggie

I seriously thought that 2010 was his last appearance in US TV, but obviously not only his show last year did work but also they told him, can you kick it up a notch? This guy is amazing, takes on comedy and make it look so natural....you can see Tom Hanks trying not to leave his nice guy image when he came up the stage.

To be honest his opening was amazing, he's realistic in his statements and I totally agree with #6. And compare to those desperate attempts of funny jokes that James Franco and Anne Hathaway did at 2011 Oscars, Ricky Gervais was pure genius! Do you think Ricky gives a f%$^ for being banned from this show? No! Because his act will be remembered, while others will or are already be forgotten.
