Army was like :

"The weapons we used where so high tech, they did not recognize a weather balloon as a threat and avoided it"

The government :

"Damn it! I said fly the RX-25 over the desert! Good thing we used the reactive dispersion armor... Go pay off the media"

People actually died as debris fell from "whatever" they were shootin at, the debris that fell was actually from the rounds the Army were firin

You can find out for yourself, numerous people died........from that big bad weather balloon

It was probably part of the broadcast of Orsen Welles' War of the Worlds. I bet a dime to a dollar that LA didn't even have Anti-aircraft batteries at the time.
