I'm guessing they are modelling THE big bang, the creation of the universe... What I'm wondering is how they can figure that rapid expansion into something the density of water can simulate rapid expansion into a void. Can anyone explain?

@3 My guess is the water being the void and the exploding black powder is the big bang. The cool thing with this model is that it shows the ripples in the water like what we see in the CMB, if they go that in-depth.
