3. Find about five hours of YouTube videos which meet the same maths similarities
4. Compose the relevant YouTube videos together to form an new video/image
5. Compare image to the original to see how close the composite comes to

It is not pointless. Consider that those images could be what a blind man would be able to see with the help of technology.
That would be quite awesome especially if the man hasn't seen anything but darkness his entire life.

It means to use the eyes and brain of a person as a camera. The reconstructed movie is based on the brain activity of a person, theoratically whitout knowledge of the shown movie. In the future this technology could visualize dreams and read your mind.
Some really scary shit.

If I'm not wrong, this is the same technique that they're actually using with the new technology/studies trying to record sleeping, just moderated to illustrate how it might be possible to get blind people to see in the future ?

#7 Yes. For the moment, we are trying to understand the waves emitted from the brain whilst visualizing images. Maybe in fifteen or twenty years, we'll not only "read" brains waves but "write" them, as in, enable non viewers to see what is around them, or something else completely. Heck, maybe will we will even watch our movies directly in our brains!
