Making you realise, you should never hide under a tree.

If we could collect that kind of power.. :O

#1, obvious fact is obvious. :)
When you lack a Faraday cage, laying down as flat as possible is the best option in order to minimize contact surface.

By the way, astonishing and creepy as it is, the freeze frame reminds me of a Christmas tree. o.O

Good lesson in the end - Not to stand under a tree during a thunderstorm.

You sir are wrong..

If you are in an open field WITH a ditch/hole, lay down flat in the ditch, this way you are lower then the rest of the field an lightning ( taking the shortest route to earth ) will likely strike somewhere else.

If there are NO ditches, crouch down with your head between your knees and try to become as small as possible.

DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT lie flat!

Djeez, i'm spending WAY to much time outdoors to know these FACTS..

#8 It's not about shortest distance. It's a factor. True, but the real rule here is "the path of the least electrical resistance". If you lay down in a ditch full of non-clean water you are more likely to get hit then when you are lying on the ground near that ditch. Just because non-clean water conducts electricity more then most other objects.

to #8 & #9 I remember an incident that happened in my town a couple of years ago: it was summer and from a sunny day suddenly developed a storm, and one poor guy running from the beach looking for cover from the rain was hit by a thunder and sadly died. There were other people around, and cars and houses. Nobody knew why he was hit but later they found out that he was carrying a bag full of mobile phones, from his friends (was only one with a bag i suppose and everybody gave phones to save them from rain). Experts explained that the electro-magnetic field all those phones created was what attracted the thunder. I say it's either that or very bad luck.

Oh yes... not a good idea to hide under a tree, it applies to animals as well:

11 cows died when hiding under a tree. The cows were clustered together tightly so they all got fried.

#8, you are right, I withdraw my advice. The reason for crouching down with your head between your knees is rather logically. You minimize the area of contact, step voltage is the buzz word here.

#13 no, you put your head between your knees to kiss your butt goodbye. >:) >:)

regardless of the situation the further away from a lightning storm the better ..as for "the path of the least electrical resistance" Factors that contribute are the higher up and closer to the cloud you are, then the better chance you have of getting fried depending on the resistivity of the object being human concrete or a steel tower and the ( amount of negative charges in the lower clouds)
Thats why in a field the taller trees ,buildings and other structures always get hit being the shorter path for the electricity to flow
