The old school of fine craftsmanship this guy has is amazing.

This would also be one cool engine kit. If he were to make it available by having a manufacturer mass produce the parts and sell them as engine kits ready to assemble. A nice winter project.

It must be a diesel, because I didn't see no spark plugs. 8-)

Not only is his craftsmanship skill amazing, but this is also a great demonstration of two other things.

First, that there still exist people who actually can do something this, in fact, amazing in their own hands... in contrast to majority, which can no longer navigate without automatized machinery (well there are those who can barely do a division on paper nowadays)...

Second, is it just me or are there others who thought something along this line "What a great hobby idea for an old age!"... ? At one point in my life, I tried piecing together plastic models which from time to time could move to a certain degree, but this is something on entirely different level. =)

And it works!! =P

#16, #18: it runs on compressed air. ;) But technically, you're right.

@cretia "oublié de remplir moteur avec l'huile moteur- engine oil?"

There is no need for extra lubrication. All the running parts have been lubed. Since the engine doesn't run on prolonged periodes of time, there is no need for a reservoir of engine oil.

running on compressed air?

No piston rings,no exhaust visible,no engine sound....I think compressed air IS what is making it appear to run. Still very nice to see.

Where is the water pump? Me thinks it would overheat if it was running on diesel or gas.
Picture of manxman29 achievements

+1 24. manxman commented 12 years ago

speaking as a mechanic of many years experience, it is running on compressed air or gas as there was no fuel injection or carburettor visible, no fuel tank, no ignition source(fuel injectors or spark plugs) and no exhaust gas visible.
however, what an amazing piece of work, just wish all engines were that simple to work on. i now work on bus engines and they are 6ft long and 1 tonne in weight and usally very dirty.

This engine is not set up as a 4-stroke internal combustion engine - it is an air motor. The giveaway is in the camshaft gearing - a 4-stroke IC engine would require a 2:1 drive to the camshafts, but the engine pictured has 1:1 drive (gears same size). The "water pump" is the horizontally-opposed 2 cylinder affair mounted to the front of the timing gear cover, and in this example would be for show only. None of this diminishes the incredible, painstaking craftsmanship which went into this creation. What a beautiful machine!
