Hit and run caught by bus

On April 2, 2012, on the Fahy Bridge in the city of Bethlehem (Pennsylvania), a minor driving a car tried to overtake a bus from the right and hit a cyclist from behind. He then tried to escape but the bus driver who witnessed the scene blocked the way. Another driver also blocked the vehicle of the fugitive by putting himself behind to prevent its retreat.

Yeah fucking retard trying to escape....

But seriously, i dont understand people like him on the bike, i meet them alot, cyclist that pedal right in the middle of the road, and when i ask why, they always say "because i can and i am allowed to do that, and its legal". Yes, they are 100% right but is that really a good reason to pedal in middle of the road? Is it really that hard to keep to the right? Why not help eachother in the traffic instead of being a bitch because "i can".....

What I don't understand is why the don't require that cyclists use walkways whenever possible. Look at the damage possible. Person walking gets hit by a man on a 28 lb bike doing 20 mph, OR person on a 28 lb bike doing 20 mph gets hit by a 3800 lb car doing 50. The math speaks for itself, and yes, I've seen plenty of idiot cyclists in my time too. They are only supposed to ride two deep in staggered formation here, but you see them in 25 rider herds taking up entire lanes of traffic in the narrowest, windiest, blind corner main roads. You'd think they all had deathwishes, or some conglomerate plan to get nailed and sue themselves into disabled retirement.

I know the car's drivers make a wrong desicion to run... but cmon that cyclist ask for that hit :|

I agree with #4. It is true that the car driver that run after the hit was wrong.

But the cyclist was asking for it. He was in the middle if the bridge highway. He was jamming traffic and yet he is going like he owns the road.

And it is obvious the cars far behind don't see what is in front; since the car directly behind the cyclist is blocking the field of vision. Not to mention the big bus was behind the cyclist before he was run by the car.

#2 Driving in the middle of the road is much safer than on the side ... if u are on the side some car driver dont pay attention to you .

The cyclist didnt do anything wrong.

#6 You mean like the driver who ran him over even though he was in the middle of the road? Drivers who won't see a cyclist won't see him regardless of being on the middle or not. It is called mutual consideration. He should go a little bit more to the side. Visible enough for drivers to see him but considerate enough for cars to go through.

maybe more ppl should use bicycles instead of getting in their cars for short distances. when motorists get more used to it the cyclists should stay on the side of the road.

but then, most peopel are way to lazy to get on a bicycle

I'm from The Netherlands and we have very good bicycle lanes (and a lot of them), but I will try to explain why this guy cycles in the middle of his lane.
1. he will be seen better, if you cycle on the side it is more likely that cars dont see you.
2. if you cycle all the way to the side, cars will not change lanes for you if they overtake you. and when the lanes are just wide enough for 2 cars it will mean all the cars will pass you with just a few centimeters space between you and them. this is way more dangerous. and also the risk of a car hitting your steer with their right-rear vieuw mirror, this will barely cause any damage to the car but the cyclist will fall and probably get run over by the next car.
I know this can be annoying for cars, but it is the savest way for cyclists.

In most states in the US, bicycles have the same rights AND responsibilities as other vehicles. Having said that, a basic understanding of simple physics and a modicum of common sense goes a long way for the cyclist. You may have the right to use the entire lane, but you could be dead right.
That bridge looks like a rather dangerous route for a bicycle. The pedestrian walkway is too narrow for bicycles and no matter what lane position, the cyclist is ultimately dependent on the surrounding motorists for his personal safety, way too dicey for me. Personally, if I had to travel that route, I would look for another transportation option, maybe something involving the empty bike rack on the front of that bus.

#2 No, it's not that hard to keep it's right, but it's safer to ride on the middle of the road.
- We are not to close to the sidewalk.
- Drivers can't overtake us without leaving any space between the car and the bike.
- ...

So yes, we drive in the middle of the road because we are allowed to.

In France, we don't drive bicycle in the middle of the road. But some (few) bicycles do have a two feet long plastic stick at their left side, soft enough to be pushed without endangering the stability of the bicycle if touched by a car, maybe it could make some scratches on a car passing too close... (I didn't find any image to illustrate this)

To #2, and others who don't get what's happening in the vid. From someone who is both a cyclist AND a motorcyclist, (and have been for MANY years) let me explain WHY, when allowed to do so we will take a whole lane... And why the laws are in place for us to do so.

Because if we don't, cars that pass generally give VERY little clearance. They are lazy. If you are riding the shoulder, your typical car will come within only INCHES of sideswiping you because they don't want to change lanes. On the other hand, if you drive in the middle of the lane, (and I prefer to ride even a little farther -- within a foot of the lane divider) it actually forces drivers to perform a PROPER lane change... Something they should be already doing anyway. I.e. signal, shoulder check, and change lanes. This gives us the safe and proper amount of clearance when the car goes by and you don't feel like you're putting your life at risk for each and every car that almost hits you when it passes.

Edit. Sorry - my bad. #13 already explained it quite well.

#19 Yes and no. In France, in a city, a bike is allowed to ride in the middle of a lane in order to prevent any event happening on the right side (a parked car open it's door for example). Outside of a city, we have the right to occupy one meter on the right side of the road.

Aside from that, a driver has to leave 1m between its car and a bike (1.5m outside of a city).

#21: I don't know if they are allowed or not. We do nearly whatever we want on bicycles in France. No stops signs, not taking traffic lights for serious http://www.ladepeche.fr/article/2011/08/11/1144380-a-nantes-les-velos-tournent-a-droite-au-feu-rouge-pas-a-toulouse.html, sometimes no lights on the bikes... Except that everybody knows that it's not allowed to ride a bicycle on highway!
I don't know the laws about riding in the middle, but when a car arrives behind, the cyclists generally goes on the right, even when they are in a group (on sundays, they are many)... The roads are very often too narrow. And of course, the cars open theirs doors or get out a parking lot or change their direction or stop anywhere on the road all the sudden without taking in account the bikes, so riding in the middle or slowly is not a bad idea in cities. Another thing: we nearly never ride on the left ; it's different in Canada, where bicycles can (or must?) ride on the left, to see the cars coming ; I think riding on the left, especially when you are slow, is a good idea.
It's also difficult to keep a bicycle for a long time in France, it's very very often stolen. Or somebody stole the seat, a wheel or show it's stupidness by breaking it. It's much more easier to keep a car (but with scratches very soon).

I'm a cyclist and I find it increasingly difficult to use bike paths, because there are too many pedestrians. That's why I take the highway, so I can keep a better top speed. The real problem with highways is that the speed limit is too high, one day maybe someone will understand the speed limits are far too much high, and everyone would be safe.

First of all it looks to me like a lot of you didn't watch the whole video because at the end it shows that it was legal and right for the guy on the bike to take up the whole lane. Secondly #5 it wasn't a bridge highway, it was just a bridge that went OVER the highway. The guy is lucky that the kid didn't run him over and kill him. Just saying biker had the right way regardless if it was a minor or not, i just goes to show why a lot of people should be driving if they aren't going to pay attention to their surroundings.

If cyclists want the right to ride down the middle of the fucking road, they should have to register their bikes just like we register cars.

#27 I totally agree. If they want to ride on roads with cars, make them pay a bike tax including get the bike inspected and have tags. Until then, they are riding a toy on the road with a death wish. They can write it on their tombstone, "But *they* said I can ride my bike in traffic." Morons.

And as far as riding a bike all the time to work etc... who would want to have the coworker show up in the cubicle next to them every day stinking from sweat for the entire shift? Most people are unable to live close enough to their jobs to make riding a bike viable.

Seems like nobody understand the feeling of biking. When you're riding you're free and you not thinking about anything, almost like a bird flying. If you're thinking that all bicyclists are going anywhere in any directions like zombies, you really should learn about the cyclism way of life.
