#(removed comment) and the tragedy doesn't end, Canadians are planning to tear down huge sections of Panamanian rain forest to create the world's largest copper strip mine. This is NOT progress, this is insanity.

This video shows that the recycling of plastic, is very important and can save many lives. All these birds and fish with plastic in their stomachs, is something we do not want!
Do not throw away that plastic, but recycling is the answer. Improve the world, but start with yourself.

Recycling is NOT the answer!!! Plastic DOES NOT GET RECYCLED! Please check this out: http://plasticpollutioncoalition.org/learn/common-misconceptions/
Only solution is to STOP Using this single use crap in the first place! There are alternatives... stop using bottled water, dont' use single use plastic bags etc etc.

#10 I do not know what country you live, but plastic is collected in the Netherlands.
And processed into new products. We are one of the pioneering countries in this
areas with very good results. All new developments are welcome at this massive pollution. But with negative thoughts and think that modern man can live without plastic products is a utopia

Ok this guys's discovered the problem. How about organising a clean up crew to collect it and get rid of it. Seems logical to me, in australia we have clean up Australia day. Most people get involved to clean up area's to make Australia more pleasent. If i could get to this island i'd be happy to help!

#11 Plastic is DOWNCYCLED into other products... and that happens to about 8% of the global plastic stream. The rest ends up in our landfills and our oceans. A single use plastic bottle, will never be made into the same item again. It has to do with the melting point... unlike metal and glass. please google this and you will see what I mean.
#12 Midway Island is in the center of the world's biggest ocean... the entire ocean is covered with this plastic that floats... it washed up on the beaches by the tons each year.... have a look at this video from the same team making this MIDWAY film, when they tried to clean one of the beaches. It is a useless task... it's clean for a day... and full of plastic again the next day. Cleaning it is not possible... we have to turn the tap off first!

#13 80% of this material comes out of our rivers... this is scientific data... the rest comes from ships and intentional dumping. So this means that the far majority comes from inland... coastal towns etc... so no matter where we live, we are part of this issue. Only solution is to stop using the SINGLE USE PLASTIC in our daily lives.

Maybe Midway island needs a caretaker team 365 days of the year clearing up this crap. what about a huge net surrounding the island collecting all this floating crap and melt the plastic to create large floating raftsand send them to Canada.

I saw a great documentary on how plastic is really poluting everything and how easy it would be to change that.

#10 and #14 I totally agree with you. It is not easy, but we need to stop using single use plastics. I'm guilty of this myself when it comes to sandwich baggies, etc, but I don't buy bottled water. That's ridiculous. Using tap water in drinking bottles is the same and tastes the same. The problem is that there is no education and awareness from the adults to the children. If adults don't lead by example the change will happen slowly or not at all.I always take my own bags to grocery stores, even small errands like CVS or hardware store. No need to use all those plastic bags. But then there is work related plastic waste that I have no influence over, tons of it. I work in healthcare. The plastic waste is incredible. Not sure all of it is necessary. Ugh! Frustrating!
