Hmmm?? Commercial flights are my usual commute in my work. And there's been some serious weather so for my journey tomorrow I have serious considerations after viewing this vid. How many diapers do I need to bring with me?

If he had such mad skills he would know it was a NO-GO for the landing the first time and went up sooner, not after he almost destroyed that plane and potentially killed the ppl on board.

Those are some serious cross winds! I have witnessed an almost identical landing attempt in Zürich, just with a little less "roller coaster" for the passengers ... and about the NO-GO, it's a GO when you're running on fumes, as most of the airliners nowadays fuel with a minimum reserve especially on commuter routes. Not to mention that an angled approach is not that uncommon, the 120km/h winds are

why dont airports have runways that are at different angles to allow for strong winds...ie instead of landing with a crosswind, why cant they choose to approach on another runway which would then be a headwind?... like a few different runways all at different angles?

boxdelux, they do have different runways, but may not have one pointing in the direction of the headwind.

I have to agree with croclacrimae, when the co-pilot is having to look over the pilot to see the runway, you either give it a lot more right rudder or tell the tower its too dangerous.

I thought that pilot had gotten it when he was approaching--nice job of countering the crosswind--but alas, it was just too much.
Worthy (and dangerous) effort.
I would appreciate it if the pilot of any planes I fly on, will not be that reckless.

There's no really easy way to say this, but that pilot was not AWESOME, she was STUPID. I am an A320 pilot and I land in crosswinds within the aircraft's limits all the time. Attempting to fly in flight regimes that exceed the aircraft's limits is as dumb as driving drunk. Proper flight and fuel planning could have precluded that whole near-fatal event. Please STOP with the accolades for such stupidity. Thanks.

This was filmed in Hamburg/Fuhlsbüttel Germany. Actually the pilot wasn't flying. He thought the weather would be great to train the 22 years old female co-pilot. She did that landing. And even if nobody should land in that kind of weather... some how you will run out of cherosine and you have to land... so I think.. for first landing it was a great job!!

I have no knowledge on the subject, so I'll refrain from attempting to say something useful...All I can think of is being one of those passengers, and I'd shit it, tbh...especially after having to take off again, and knowing...that at some point, you gonna have to be landing...

On one of my flights, the pilot used the brakes, RIGHT before taking off, while we were making a lot of speed already, in two attempts, and then we stopped trying...something was broken and we were stuck in the plane for a few hours.
Taking off with that plane was freaky enough, this would be an abso nightmare

Wow! He was good until the last couple of seconds. He was on his toes. Years ago, my daughter and I were flying into a small airport in northern California. Small plane, DC9. We were "crabbing it" also in a steady cross wind. I am sitting in a window set over the wing and I am looking right down the runway. I remember grabbing my daughter and told her to brace herself and be ready for a big bump (thinking crash). As the ground came up and just before we hit, the pilot straighten the plane on the runway and let it hit. I took the time to thank the pilot. All he camly said was "No gusting, no problem."

Turned out that the computer on board the A320 was responsible for the situation. The machine "thought" it had already landed and reduced the controls by 50%. The 24 year old Co-Pilotress nearly failed to pull it up.

The Jet straightened out when he was down half way and to the end of the runway so who's to say what the wind would be in any given area at anytime.
The Pilot made his attempt and if the wind conditions were opposite and the winder part was at the middle to the end instead, he would of made a good landing.
I think the Pilots are Top Notch, Ace's.

#3 Better to attempt a landing even in high winds such as this than to nose-dive into the ground because you have ran out of fuel!! And as for the 'Touch-n-go' landing these things weigh considerably more than the F-14 Tomcat Tom Cruise was flying when he performed the same manoevre in Top-Gun (Which he really did, honest )
