Always wondered how this was done, thanks for the upload.
However... I would like to know how the hell those "Repeaters" work... every 50km... Well they dont cut the cable and place it in-between, or there would be no point making such a long cable. And if its just something that wraps around the exterior of the cable, how the hell does it effect the light passing through the cable?
Ok just researched it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_communications_cable Looks like it is several sections of cable joined with these 'repeaters' which contain solid state lasers to boost the signal.
Also the cross section of the cable on wiki looks a lot more like I would expect it to be, than shown in this video!!

#3 That's a rather complex story. But basically a company like alcatech lays the cable on the bottom of the ocean by investing a lot of money. Then they go to internet service providers and say: Hey, we got some fast data connections accross the sea, do you want to rent it? And ISP's can say yes then and finally provide us an internet connection. So, we pay the internet service providers. They will pay companies like alcatech to lay the cable. That's pretty much it.
